PART I
A large man tells a group of passengers that they are being taken north to die, but they are being resettled to new homes. The large man pulls through the bodies and tries to pull the grate, but the passengers are silent. A lanky boy named Sebastian watches the situation, but he focuses on a girl named Fannie. Sebastian had always believed he loved Fannie before the trouble began.
As the large man pulls the grate, he finds an opening too small for him to fit through. He drops down, cursing, and a voice tells him someone smaller. Sebastian grabs Fannie and tries to push her through the scrum of bodies, but she is dead. The passengers rush to the window, but Fannie is pushed through. A bearded man whispers in Fannie's ear, telling her to be a good person and tell the world what happened.
As the train scrambles to put the grate back over the window, a German officer stands in blinding sunlight. Sebastian screams "HALT!" and watches the hands fall away from the window. He curses the one missing member of his family, his younger brother, Nico, and promises to find him one day and make him pay for all this.
The story is about the truth, the only thing in the world you can trust. Nature is fickle, and humans can only trust themselves. The truth is the shadow you cannot outrun, holding your final reflection. A boy tried to break the truth, hiding during the Holocaust and changing names. The truth knows who could spot a little liar better than me.
In 1936, Nico Krispis, a young boy from Salonika, Greece, is playing in a game called abariza, where children chase each other. When Giorgos gets too close, Nico tries to tag him, but Giorgos slaps his shoulder. Nico's teammates groan and they stomp away. The story revolves around deception, great deception, but also great truth, heartbreak, war, family, revenge, and love.
Nico never told a lie until he was eleven years old. His grandfather, Lazarre, taught him the value of honesty and the importance of truth. When Nico's friend told him that the gods lived on Mount Olympus, Lazarre replied that there was only one God. Nico refused to believe this, stating that God is always watching.
Nico had a remarkable facility for languages, could draw almost anything, and was an attractive child. His tall, muscular father, tobacco merchant, and fair-haired mother were blessings, as Truth enhanced his physical features. Nico's pure heart was what attracted strangers, and he was a boy to be believed. Over time, people in his neighborhood began calling him Chioni, the Greek word for "snow," because he seemed untouched by earthly deceit.
In a world full of lies, honesty glimmers like silver foil reflecting the sun, making Nico a beacon of hope in a world filled with lies.
Nico's story revolves around three intertwined characters: his brother Sebastian, who is three years older and more serious, and Fannie, a girl he met on a train from Salonika to Auschwitz-Birkenau. Sebastian was devoted to his family, including his mother, father, grandparents, twin baby sisters, and Nico, who was his rival in racing through the olive oil market. However, Sebastian had a greater devotion for Fannie, a shy twelve-year-old girl.
Fannie's father, Shimon Nahmias, owned an apothecary and Fannie helped him organize the shelves. Sebastian would visit the shop to buy something for his mother, but he was privately hoping for time alone with Fannie. Fannie's heart was set on him when she wore a new dress that her father had purchased as a present.
The train journey from Salonika to Auschwitz-Birkenau was a tragic event. A German officer shot the large man in the head, killing him and causing blood to splatter the train wall. The passengers were left to see what the German wanted them to see. The officer offered to let one of the prisoners go out the window, and the woman gave him her baby.
The woman refused, but the officer allowed her to leave through the window. The officer then tossed the baby through the opening, leaving only Sebastian to make eye contact with him.
In summary, Nico's story revolves around three interconnected characters: his brother Sebastian, Fannie, and Udo Graf. Sebastian, a young boy, is devoted to his family and his brother, while Fannie, a young girl, is captivated by Sebastian.
