Chapter 1

Chapter 1 is titled: “Anxiety Goes Viral” the author reviews his college experience where before graduate school he starts to feel unhealthy...but he was in denial when told his symptoms were that of anxiety (i.e. running to the bathroom, severe bloating, and stomach cramps). He realized that anxiety can affect anyone, even unknowingly, and can present with a wide range of shifting symptoms. There are many anxiety disorders, including General Anxiety Disorder. From specific phobias and Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder. Sometimes people are unaware that they are anxious or exhibiting symptoms of anxiety.

The author provides multiple examples of anxiety in real-life situations, including that of two high-powered, “put-together” women. Excessive planning can be a manifestation of anxiety because things that are unplanned lack structure can "scream anxiety." Anxiety can have a slow burn effect or a tripping point like a tea kettle. It can be tricky to diagnose, as we all get a little anxious, it's a part of life, but how we deal with it is critical. If we don't understand our anxiety or how our brain works, with its basic survival instincts, oftentimes we make the issues worse or spend a lifetime trying to fix it.

That's what this book is all about: what you can do to change your relationship to anxiety so that it "unwinds on its own." The author reports that anxiety is "not new" and has been around a long time, mentioning a letter John Adams wrote to Thomas Jefferson in 1816. In the modern world, anxiety. Statistics of anxiety have been increasing over the years and are noted from various sources and studies. Not surprisingly, it's reported that anxiety has soared with the occurrence of COVID-19: "A study in the United States in April 2020 found that 13.6 percent of respondents reported severe psychological distress.

That's a whopping 250 percent increase compared to 2018, where only 3.9 percent reported this level of woe." The author reports that large-scale disasters almost always increase substance abuse and anxiety, and anxiety often presents as comorbidity, meaning two diagnoses at once (i.e. anxiety and depression).

Chapter 2

Chapter 2 is titled: “The Birth of Anxiety” and explains the connections of anxiety with fear and how fear is a survival mechanism. It keeps us safe by teaching us to avoid dangerous situations. We only need three simple things to learn: a cue (from the environment), a behavior, and a result. Introduction of the Prefrontal Cortex (PFC) of the “new brain” which is used for planning the future via predictions based on past experiences. It maps out different options for what might happen in the future. This can create anxiety, and it does when our PFC does not have enough information to predict the future.

Fear itself does not mean anxiety, as it is an adaptive learning mechanism. Anxiety is "maladaptive" and allows our brain to spin out of control. Fear can keep you safe and here the author offers three types of speeds of reactions that help us distinguish learning from anxiety: Immediate (milliseconds), Acute (seconds to minutes), and Chronic (months to years). When your old and new brains coordinate well, they keep you safe and calm. But when fear is paired with uncertainty, it creates anxiety. We can seek out information to ease the anxiety of the unknown, however, we often become overwhelmed with too much information, resulting in choice overload.
