Chapter 1
It was a cold April night when they came. I could remember the multicolored lights flashing outside my bedroom window. When I woke up and saw the lights, I thought it was a dream at first.
Then my window began to lift, seemingly of its own accord, and I felt the cold night air on my skin. That’s when I realized I wasn’t dreaming.
I was only eighteen-years-old and living on my parents’ farm. We lived out in the Middle of Fuckin’ Nowhere, Illinois. My dad tended to the crops, and my mom took care of the cows. I’d help out in any way I could.
Normally, by this point, my dad would be coming out with his shotgun, threatening whatever appeared on our property. But I couldn’t hear or see him. Actually, by the time that the window lifted, I couldn’t see or hear anything other than those bright lights and a loud whirring sound. Like a rapidly modulating bass sound really heavy on my ears, and lights so bright and colorful they could blind me.
I didn’t know what was going on then. Never in my life would I expect that I was being abducted by aliens.
****
Earlier that day, I was out with my dad in the corn field. Apparently he’d heard something the night before and wanted me to go check it out with him. It was a fairly warm earlier that day though a little breezy, so I was wearing my short-shorts, a tank top, and a slim blue hoodie to deal with the wind. My dad didn’t like me dressing like that, as those kind of clothes tended to show offmy assets, so to speak, but it wasn’t like anyone would see me out here in the middle of nowhere.
“Holy shit,” my dad said, his eyes widening.
“What is it?” I asked as he ran ahead of me.
“What the hell happened here?”
I followed behind him, pushing through the tall stalks of corn, before rejoining my dad on the other side. That was when I saw it. A large amount of corn stalks, flattered, as if something large had just settled right on top of them, like a plane or something. Needless to say, this wasn’t typical.
“Whoa,” I said, my own brown eyes opening wide.
My dad grimaced. “Goddamn it, this is half our crop.”
“What could’ve done this, you think?”
“I don’t know. Maybe one of them government drones?” my dad grumbled, turning around. “I need to tell your mom about this. It’s gonna be a lean couple of months. You stick around here and look around. Maybe you can figure out what happened.”
“Got it,” I sighed, putting my hands into my hoodie pocket and walking around the perimeter of the flattened corn stalks, keeping my eye out for anything out of the ordinary.
Something felt weird about this place, actually, as I walked around. Like I was being watched. Everyone now and then, as I walked around, I’d stop and turn around. But there was no one there. Just me, standing alone in the middle of this flattened corn field.
The breeze began to pick up just then, into a full blown gust of wind, spinning round and round the perimeter of the flattened corn stalks. I nearly fell over as the wind suddenly picked up and seemed concentrated on this single spot. I wasn’t sure what was happening, but that was when I tried to flee.
