cCain looks to the past to send the readers on a journey through his years as an American hero -when he was held as a prisoner for five years during the Vietnam War-, his time in the Senate, his presidential campaign versus Barack Obama, and his involvement with the democratic efforts in Eastern Europe and the Middle East, and how all of this has affected his life and his work. He admits that the war on Iraq cannot be considered as anything other than a grave mistake, and accepts his part of the blame. He believes, however, that if America had had knowledge that Iraq didn’t have any weapons of mass destruction, overthrowing Hussein and supplanting him with a basic democracy would still have been a fair cause. He continues to be an advocate of American intervention in the Middle East.
He criticizes the “false nationalism”, as he calls it, and the polarization of political ideas that affect the American administration and its current course of action. McCain says that Americans tend to argue endlessly over little differences and end up amplifying them into ruptures that are usually unending. He argues in favor of democratic internationalism and nonpartisanship, in which opposing political parties can hold hearings and use compromises to find common ground before passing major legislations. He continues by expressing his belief that Americans need friends and that, at the same time, the rest of the world is counting on us.
He also recalls how his life was when he worked with celebrated individuals such as late Senator Edward M. Kennedy and Fred Thompson among others, describing these experiences as one of his most enjoyable moments. He also pays tribute to George HW Bush. In addition, in a time of political turmoil over President Trump’s scandalous actions, the Senator talks about his disagreements with a number of presidents and doesn’t hold back in his objections to Trump’s declarations and tactics. After all, his vote was the one that decisively blocked the repeal of Obamacare and now he opposes to Trump’s pick for director of the CIA, Gina Haspel.
