The Arcane Journey

This is my first book and i hope it does well. I was inspired by the Halo franchise and i have decided to do my own with a spin on it. I hope this provides some entertainment or an escape from reality.BookRix GmbH & Co. KG81371 Munich

Chapter 1 The Arcane’s Journey

It's been 1 year since an alien species the Cerible attack on the United States and the rest of the world. It's been about 12 weeks since I have enlisted into the United Nations Armed Forces. My name is Ivan Grinch, the year is 2093. It's 04:30 I only know this because the Drill Instructor walks down screams at that time everyday "Wake up you lazy bastards! Center Line!" With that message bouncing around in my head I leapt to my feet and made sure everyone in my squad was awake. There is no way I'm getting smoked this early in the morning, so I made sure my squad was the first ones to greet the Instructor while at center line. With deep and cold voice, I shouted, "Squadron greet Sergeant Lamboski!"

My squad met me with the same tone and energy, "Good morning Sergeant Lamboski!"

He almost looked pleased with me but kept his dark straight face with an intense stare like he was looking for any insecurity in my soul and continued with his morning lecture. "It is a good morning private. And do you know why it’s a good morning?" With my eyes gauged on the wall behind him I asked, "Why is it a good morning Sergeant?"

The Sergeant looked at me and said with a grin, "It's a good morning because this is the day where you and your squad are going into the War Games! The War Games will test your ability to lead your squad along with the other squad leaders of my platoon against the other platoon. The 32nd Special forces hasn't lost to the 15th Rangers division in 3 years and damnit it’s going to stay that way so don't disappoint me private. The mission briefing starts at 10:30 so take this time to get your squad ready. Go get some chow, today will be a long."

As the Sergeant walked away, I gave my squad the order to fall out and get ready for the games. We took this time to go to the chow hall and eat at least try to keep down the mush that they feed us. It's better than nothing I'll tell you that. With my belly fool I hit the showers and thought about how much longer we would be here for. After the brisk 5 minutes allowed in the shower, I really took a good look at myself in mirror for the first time in 12 weeks. My skin was a nice milk chocolate color and my hair was short and black. In the past 12 weeks I had grown some muscle, but I was still as slim as a toothpick. You would think I would have grown at least an inch taller since I'm only 19 but I'm still only 5'9. My face is something like a man-child, with soft skin, a sharp jaw line, bushy eyebrows, and a clean shave. I stared into my own dark eyes and watched as my reflection stared back at me. I had decided that I've seen enough, and I turned away to get into my camo.

Chapter 2 A Brief Brief

It's 10:00 I need to get my squad ready to for briefing before Lamboski takes a bite out of my ass. We marched down to the briefing tent half a mile away from the barracks. The area in front of the tent was a dry grass land with brick houses and some destroyed buildings scattered around. To the right of the town was a wooded area with pine trees and a small river flowing down through the tree stumps. Winding back and forth from the base of one tree to the next. This would be the calm before the storm.

We entered the tent with our hears open and our mouths shut there was enough room for the whole platoon. As the tent start to fill up I could feel anxiety and excitement from all everyone sitting down, this would be the only time to proof ourselves to our drill instructors. With the sound of Lamboski opening the tent flap there was a deafening silence in the room not a single soul made a sound except for Lamboski. He walked to the front of the tent and turned the lights off to present our objective and map of the area. In a raspy voice he growled "Alright men, listen up! Your objective is to secure this town that is occupied by the enemy platoon. They are dug in deep and waiting for our assault. Now I'm going to need the squad leaders to get up and come to the front of the room."

As unwilling as the other two looked I'm surprised they came to the front. The squad leader of bravo was a tall white boy by the name of Andrew Larmon. His hair was dark and curly with a somewhat childlike face, he didn't look too old, but he also didn't look too young. He isn't too much older than me with him being a couple of months older than me. The squad leader of Alpha was a slim Mexican boy by the name of Andre San. He too had dark and curly hair, but it was much longer than Andrew's.

He was also the same age as me and Andrew what could possibly go wrong with 3 kids being squad leaders. Lamboski focused his attention on us and gave us our orders, "Grinch your squad is going to be the main force this operation and you are going to drive straight up the middle. Larmon and San your squads will be flanking on the left and right while the enemy is distracted with the middle. Grinch expect heavy resistance down the middle make sure you keep your heads down the enemy platoon has one hell of a sniper. Now you have seen the plan now get back to your seats I have to go over one last thing."

The three of us sat back down with our squads as Lamboski showed us the guns we were going to be shooting with. "This is your standard M43 automatic rifle. As you all know it fires 7.62 at 955 rounds per minute, however for today we are going to be shooting soft clay pellets, it won't kill you but if you get hit with one you are going to wish it did. If you do get hit, I suggest you falling to the ground and wait for a medic to come drag you away. Please refrain from shooting unarmed medics, I'm joking shoot them if you want. Briefing is over gear up and rally to your squads designated location and wait for the horn."
