Claire loved going to church. She enjoyed dressing up nicely, wearing hats with too many feathers and listening to priest Cecil's caring words echoing from every direction. The shining stone floor polished by the crowds walking over it every Sunday, the neat gold that embellished the statues and paintings of biblical characters and of course the community gathering to her sides and in the back rows. There were always two empty seats in the front row reserved for her and Daniel. The admiration he gets from the Greenville inhabitants was very pleasing but it didn't help to lower the shock that was still freezing the blood in her veins.
It was until she felt Daniels hand on hers as she noticed that she had started trembling again at that thought. She studied him as he continued following each word of priest Cecil's preaching with his constant calmness and intensity that had become his own. It was sad in some way how his job took away his liveliness. She squeezed his hand lightly though she wasn't even expecting any answering gesture.
Cecil raised the goblet of wine to the crowd. His melodic voice surrounded the community: ''God who takes away the sins of the world. Have mercy on us“. The moment the goblet reached his lips, Claire noticed the upside-down cross on it and recognized it immediatly.
''DON'T!“ she screamed out in deep horror. Every face in the church shot in her direction. But it was too late. She could see it from his adam's apple that Cecil had drunk a big gulp of whatever was inside that mug. The priest lowered it slowly and gave her a bewildered gaze. Frozen in that position the goblet fell from his hand and made a rattling sound on the stone floor that reverberated through the whole church. Everything went dead quiet.
All of a sudden Cecil bend over and began to choke blood and croak frantically. The people started mumbling nervously. ''Do something!“ Claire yelled at Daniel. He jumped up from his seat immediatly and bend over the spasmical shaking body now lying on the ground behind the altar. A calm routine character ruled Daniel's actions. He touched Cecil's forehead, turned him to the side, tasted a drop of the dark red liquid near the goblet and spit it out again.
''Toxic“, he stated objectively. That word was enough to inject panic to the whole church. Everyone started talking and exclaiming at once. Totally overpowered by the situation Claire collapsed below the bench. ''We need to take him with us.“ Daniel shouted at her.
''I can't-“ she whimpered.
''You must.“ he insisted. It was Cecil's painful scream that made her get to her feet again. She stumbled to the front and grapped the priest's feet. That way they dragged him out of the church holding on tight to his struggling extremities.
