ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Catherine de Duve is an art historian and a painter. She worked for the Royal museums of Belgium’s educational services and created teaching workshops at the Brussels Foundation for Architecture.
In 2000, she launched her own publishing house with a brand new concept. Advised by the director of MAC (Grand Hornu), she created the international collection “Happy Museum”, dedicated to a young audience.
Catherine de Duve is also published by RMN, Hatier and Alice editions, and works with dozens of international museum curators.

The world in the 16th century
Look at the world in Bruegel’s day. It’s the Renaissance! Intellectuals are fascinated by the literature of the ancient Greeks and Romans. These intellectuals are known as the humanists! Books are being printed for the first time. Trade and art are developing as new continents are discovered. In the holds of their ships, explorers are bringing back plants, spices, gold and vegetables – things that were previously unknown.

Pieter Bruegel is a famous Flemish painter of the Renaissance.
He learned his craft in Antwerp, in the workshop of Master Pieter Coeck. In the 16th century, thanks to its port, Antwerp was one of the wealthiest cities in the world. Merchants, bankers, intellectuals and artists from all over the world were drawn to it.
