The Man Outside

He stood outside in the warm drizzle, silent. Waiting in silence so long, he barely remembered how to speak. Alone, there was no need for speech. How long had he waited outside that house? Months? Years? He lost track. And why stay?

A husband and wife lived in the house. From the shadows he watched them. Rarely did he let himself be seen. When he did, he was careful not to suggest any special interest in the modest property or its owners. To them, he was just some harmless homeless man wandering by outside.

The man was old, battle-scarred and tired. Once he was a handsome soldier who turned heads with his commanding stride, but the war changed that. Now his face, burned and scarred beyond recognition, made people turn away. And so he waited outside, under cover of darkness and shade, while the one he loved and longed to be with walked by each day.

The lady was that one, for she had been his fiancée before he was sent to war. When they first met, he was transfixed by her beauty and her grace and innocence. She had flowing black hair and eyes that sparkled a bright, majestic blue. She was the first person to break through his hardened military exterior and find his heart, as well guarded as a state secret. He fell in love with her that moment, and his love never faded, even today.

Two years passed, and his love continued to grow. Finally, one night after dinner, he asked her.

"My dearest Irene, will you marry me?" he asked, placing on her finger a ring with a sparkle brighter than all but the one in her eyes, which grew even brighter as he spoke.
