When Liv wakes up and sees a little elf with radiant golden eyes in front of her, she thinks she is dreaming. But the little creature takes her into a magical world beyond the old garden wall, which she is strictly forbidden to cross. Through a wondrous old gate, Liv finally enters another world in which she experiences unforgettable magical moments with all her senses. Together with her grandmother, the girl is able to experience the changing seasons in harmony with nature. A world so far away and yet so close, a world so magical and beautiful, a world that needs our love, perhaps more than ever today.

Dedication

For my beloved grandma, who was able to capture nature in enchanting watercolors, and my great-grandmother, who started every day by giving all her trees a hug.

For my daughter's as yet unborn children, whom she wants so much.

For Tommaso, who once told me that the world was so incredibly beautiful that he could never get enough of it.

For Mrs. Engelmohr, who lovingly realized my sketches.

For all jene who read my book, who let themselves fall and be carried away with all their senses to a time when they were still children.

The magic chest

Once upon a time there was a little elf who lived in a beautiful old chest made of pine wood. It still smelled of forest, wind and sea - as if you were walking through a pine forest by the sea on a hot summer's day with your eyes closed, listening to the music of the wind playing with the trees and waves and letting yourself be carried away by the scent of resin and salt. Yes, the little elf experienced all of this as she sat in her dwelling that morning.

The chest was decorated all over with wondrous flowers and vines, their stems twisting and turning merrily. The fairytale-like flower arrangement led along a winding path to a magical old gate. The magical creature seemed to come from there.

The little elf sat on the edge of the chest, dangling her long legs to the beat of a mysterious melody that only she seemed to hear.

She stretched her face towards the first rays of sunshine. They tickled her nose so much that she let out an almost - but only almost - inaudible "Hatschi". She was very startled by this. She was strictly forbidden to make herself heard. No sound was allowed to pass her lips, and now something like this, my goodness! The little girl who lived in the room opened her eyes. She blinked for a moment and spotted the elf just before she could disappear through the secret doorway.

At first Liv thought she was still dreaming - a very strange dream. That couldn't actually be true. She never dreamed of strange things. Everything was orderly in her world. Nothing strange, exciting or crazy happened. Her room was beautiful. She lay in a four-poster bed covered with the finest fabrics. It would have been worthy of a princess.

She had been given every toy imaginable. In her wardrobe were beautiful dresses in all the colors of the rainbow: yellow, orange, red, blue, green and purple. You would have thought that Liv was a very happy little girl. Somehow, however, she seemed to be sadder by the day. She could never please her parents. Her wild red curls always escaped from the strict plait that her nanny tied so carefully. The freckles that seemed to dance so merrily across her face were a thorn in her mother's side. That's why she was always told to wear a hat when she went out in the sun and never to go into the garden without a parasol. Liv's eyes were green with golden lights in them. Not as clear and blue as her mother's, but mysterious and wondrous like the light of the sun's rays after a long summer rain in a dense forest.
