The noble Polish family Przegonia.

Die adlige polnische Familie Przegonia.

The noble Polish family Przegonia.

Przegonia. Like the coat of arms of Ostoja, only the sword is not broken, but whole; Helmet decoration: a growing, winged, left-turned, black dragon with outstretched paws, spewing a wide stream of fire from its mouth, in which the horizontally placed coat of arms, i.e. the sword, is located between the two crescents. About the origin of the coat of arms it is said: When King Bolestaw the Bold (105982) sent a force against the Moravians invading Poland, the hetman sent a knight Sobor, of the coat of arms Ostoja, ahead with the vanguard. As soon as Ostoja noticed the Moravians, who were approaching in large numbers, he sent word to the Hetman asking for reinforcements, but engaged in battle with the enemy, although the latter had driven him back several times. But he held his ground and, when reinforcements arrived, launched a fresh attack, from which the enemy retreated. For this deed, the king changed his family coat of arms by giving him the whole sword and the dragon as a helmet decoration as a symbol of the furious and fiery action against the enemy. Because Ostoja, pushed back and forth by the enemy several times, still did not leave the place, the coat of arms was called Przegonia (from przegonic, driven back and forth). Because of the similarity of the coats of arms of Ostoja and Przegonia, the bearers of one or the other will probably confuse them. This coat of arms is used by:

Bartkowski, Bratkowski, Domaracki, Dulski, Dyako, Dzwonkowski, Glodowski, Goluski, Hryniewicki, Huba, Kowalkowski, Krynski, Kryski, Lisowski, Niewieiscinski, Przepalkowski, Strzegocki, Wietrzynski, Zakobielski, Zolczycki, Zwiartowski.

Przegonia coat of arms

Crest : Gules , between a crescent and a crescent or , a sword with light hilt and pommel up to the chief, blade end brushed, all in order. For a crest, a rampant half-dragon that spits flame, and the charge of the shield that faces evil.

There are two crescents of gold, back to back, and between them a vertical sword, hilt up and blade down, in a red field. Emerging from a helmeted crown is a half-dragon, with its wings and front legs pointing to the left (although others point the other way). Flames can be seen coming out of his mouth, and within the flames can be seen the same sword and moons depicted on the shield. Paprocki so described it in Gzniado cnoty [Nest of Virtue], p. 304, and in Ohherbach [On Clan Shields], page 289; and Okolski in Volume 2, page 529, and in Klejnoty [Crests], p. 75

This shield bears a close resemblance to that of Ostoja, as it was bestowed on one of the Ostoja clans on the following occasion. When he moved to Moravia with the army, the Polish commander sent ahead an experienced knight with a few men as a reconnaissance party; This knight belonged to the Ostoja clan. He met a group of Moravians who had crossed the Polish border, but then saw a large enemy army in the distance. However, he did not lose heart; He sent word to the commander as soon as possible for reinforcements while he himself attacked the Moravians. He held them for a long time, though on more than one occasion they almost drove him back. When reinforcements arrived, they zealously attacked and defeated the enemy.

For this bravery, his ancestral arms were transformed by Ostoja by placing a whole sword between the moons and a dragon on the helmet as described above for defeating the Moravians with such fury and ferocity. The new coats of arms were called Przegonia because the enemy tried several times to drive it back, but he didn't budge. (Translator's note: "repel" in Polish is przegonian, imperfect form przeganiac; this name can be interpreted to mean "They keep trying to repel him (but in the end they can't)."

Okolski traces the origin of this clan shield to the reign of King Boleslaw Smialy [1058-1079]. However, due to the similarity of shields, some joined Przegonia, others Ostoja. Paprocki read various monastic grants from 1270 by Miroslaw Przegonia, castellan of Sandomierz, and by Piotr, Count Przegonia.
