This story is based on a fable from one of the world's ancient works of literature, 'Mahabharata.’ The story is a perfect example of how greed and selfishness can lead to a total loss. It revolves around a cunning and greedy older man who believes that outliving everyone is the world’s greatest achievement. One day, he approaches the king and asks for half of the kingdom as a reward for his so-called achievement. However, the wise minister of the king intervenes and gives him a fitting answer, highlighting the futility of his request and the importance of generosity and doing good deeds in one's life.

This story has its roots in the rich and fascinating ancient myths and legends of Bharat, which is now known as India. These tales have been passed down through generations and offer a glimpse into the cultural and historical heritage of the region. They provide a window into the beliefs, values, and traditions of the people who lived in the region many centuries ago. They continue to inspire and captivate audiences around the world today.

In the land of Vidarba, there was a magnificent kingdom ruled by a wise and just king. The kingdom was a place of peace and prosperity, where people from all walks of life lived happily together.

Amid this kingdom was a small town where an older man named Dyumu lived. He was a well-known figure in his village, but not for the right reasons.

Despite his advanced age of one hundred and fifty years, Dyumu was notorious for his greedy and miserly nature. He had amassed an enormous fortune over the years, but instead of using it to enhance his life or help others, he hoarded every penny he earned. His obsession with money had become so extreme that he often foregoes necessities such as food and shelter to save more. This had earned him a reputation as one of the most miserly people in his community, and many had come to fear and despise him for his selfishness.

He took great pride in his age and would often boast about it to anyone who would listen. He believed himself to be superior to others simply because of his longevity. His arrogance knew no bounds, and he would go to great lengths to prove his superiority, even if it meant belittling and humiliating others.

Despite his unpleasant personality and behavior, the people of Veedi tolerate him because they know he is too old to change. Dyumu's age set him in his ways, and he refused to accept that others could be right or have opinions different from his own. His behavior often caused discomfort and anxiety to those around him.

One day, Dyumu decided to travel to the capital city to meet the king. He believed that he deserved special recognition for his long and accomplished life. When his turn came, Dyumu appealed his plea in the king's court.

The kind-hearted king listened patiently to the older man's request and congratulated him for his achievement. The king rewarded him with one hundred gold coins and ten acres of land in his village.
