Introducing the Soul of America by Jon Meacham

T

he Soul of America: The Battle for Our Better Angels is a book written by historian Jon Meacham elaborating on fear and partisanship during critical moments in American history. It is a book written in response to the current political climate—one full of hate and suspicion, and an appeal for the better side of the American soul to prevail.

The book presents the idea that American history proceeds in a forward motion as the nation continues to fight for liberties, vanquish diseases, and even go to the stars. Meacham gives an encouraging note to readers by quoting Thomas Paine who says Americans have it in their power to “begin the world over again.” He tells the account of Franklin D. Roosevelt who remembers what Endicott Peabody, the rector of Groton School taught him. Peabody said that civilization follows an upward trend even if it may appear that it is in reversal. Meacham writes that this Peabody-Roosevelt gospel looked true enough—America went on in a forward motion to achieve greatness, wealth, and happiness despite facing inequalities and inequities. The author writes that fear shaped life and politics in America during the Reconstruction period and into the modern era. It is primarily the fear of whites allowing blacks to have too much freedom and power. He quotes historian and activist W.E.B. Du Bois who said in 1903 that the 20th-century problem is that of the color-line. Meacham adds that the problem is not confined to the 20th century but to the whole of American history. The American soul pertains to the American vision defined in the proposition made by Thomas Jefferson in the Declaration of Independence, that “all men are created equal.” Meacham believes that every generation is responsible for creating an environment where Americans can live freely, pursue happiness and have equal opportunities. The author relates stories like that of Franklin D. Roosevelt, the thirty-second US president, who was “one of a handful of truly great and transformative presidents” in American history. He compares Roosevelt to President Donald Trump who has a Hobbesian view of his office in thinking that every single day in his office is “a war of all against all.” Meacham reminds readers that in the 21st century when the presidency is likened to reality television,  it is good to recall the examples of past American presidents who have  “unified and inspired” the people. Harry Truman said every hope and fear of American citizens is of concern to the president.  Similarly, Lyndon Johnson was aware of his mandate to use his strength to provide justice for black Americans. Lyndon Johnson, newly installed hours after JFK’s assassination, was driven by the thought of having the civil rights bill be passed in Congress right away. Meacham concludes the book by offering advice on how Americans can find their better angels at a time when the current American president is undermining American values.
