My first encounter with Godzilla was when I saw “King Kong vs. Godzilla” at age 9. I was enthralled by the amazing Tokusatsu, and the story of the Kaiju kings of the East and the West battling it out in glorious widescreen completely captivated me. Since then, my life has intertwined with Godzilla films, but 59 years after first being introduced to Godzilla, in the year that Hollywood filmmakers would make Godzilla and King Kong battle each other once again, I feel it can be nothing shortof fate and destiny that I would be releasing my first English-language Godzilla-related art book. Part of the appeal of Godzilla as a villain is the feeling of catharsis that he gives to the viewer as he wreaks havoc, but it’s not only Godzilla that really attracts me to Kaiju films, but rather the worldthat Godzilla inhabits. Godzilla, as realized by incredible Tokusatsu techniques, is really cool and has a monstrous beauty to him, but more than that, I am always drawn into the world that becomes forever changed as a result of his appearance. For me, Godzilla films recapture that strangely exciting feeling of knowing that a typhoon was about to hit, for example, which I often felt as a child. The violently blowing wind, the sky covered in swirling clouds, the suddenly empty streets. The tense air of some mysterious, awe-inspiring being coming from right around the corner. For me, Godzilla and his friends open the door to that world for me and lead me through it. While continuing to watch Kaiju films for over half a century, I’ve done my best to illustrate the fantastic world that they inhabit. It would be my absolute pleasure if that fascination that I feel for Godzilla and Godzilla films was relayed to you who holds this art book in your hands. To finish, I’d like to thank from the bottom ofmy heart all the hard-working staff from Japan, America, and England who helped make this project a reality from start to finish. Thank you.

How should Godzilla be portrayed and what are your thoughts about what the ideal Kaiju is?
KAIDA
The first Kaiju movie I watched was “Mothra” (1961), so I didn’t really think of Kaiju as being scary or anything like that. I was more impressed by the sheer scale of it all and absolutely floored by the visual of Tokyo Tower being made into a cocoon. The scene where heat rays are being fired from both sides of the screen at the cocoon left such an impression on me that I drew it for my summer homework picture diary. The following year I would see Godzilla for the first time in “King Kong vs. Godzilla” (1962), and he left a much bigger impression on me than King Kong. The impact of Godzilla’s dorsal fins flashing blue when he shot his atomic heat beam was undeniable. That beautiful blue color was really only seen in that film. It was also Godzilla’s massive presence. The sheer terror of such a giant creature appearing from the other side of the mountain and coming toward us was really felt in the scene where he chases after the Tohoku Main Line train car. It made you really feel like you were one of those many people evacuating and seeking shelter. So, in that way, I would say that in addition to being huge and giving a sense of scale, relaying fear and terror is a necessity when talking about the appeal and ideal interpretation of Kaiju.
HIGUCHI
I think “King Kong vs. Godzilla” is a bit different from most Kaiju movies in that, much like the Salaryman Kigeki series released during that same period, it was more of a movie of simple amusement, a well-made piece of entertainment as opposed to a ‘real’ film. At its core it’s a comedy, but it maintains a peculiar balance with Tokusatsu and the occasional serious moment.
KAIDA
A great part about Toho is that they didn’t cut corners regarding any aspect of their films. Examples of this are the newspaper company in “Mothra vs. Godzilla” (1964) , the quality of the
