Introducing Think Again

"Rethinking" is the process of acquiring new information and changing how we believe and think based on that new data. Adam Grant divided Think Again: The Power of Knowing What You Don't Know into eleven chapters.

Chapter 1: According to the political scientist Phil Tetlock, our mindset can either be of the three: preachers, prosecutors, and politicians. We are preaching when we promote our ideas and defend them from criticisms. We take the role of prosecutors when we scrutinize others' opinions to win an argument. We are politicians when we try to win over others for approval and agreement. However, according to Grant, there is a fourth mindset that everyone should be equipped with, that of scientists. Thinking like a scientist makes people view everything from a scientific point of view. As scientists, we are expected to doubt what we already know and be curious about the unknown. When faced with new information, we are to update our views based on them. Truths are only acceptable once we test them with hypotheses and experiments. Scientists rely heavily on evidence and do not jump to conclusions. However, what's happening, in reality, is that we frequently fall into the other three roles because we are searching for the reasons why we are right instead of why we are wrong. We always seek validation based on our desire to be accepted or approved by others. Validation equals overconfidence, and that would hamper our ability to think scientifically. Rethinking plays a critical role in this event. The rethinking cycle comes in four parts: humility, doubt, curiosity, and discovery.
