Chapter 1

Driving up the mountain roads, Joel took a few wrong turns in the darkness of the early morning hours, but eventually he saw the sign for Brennerman Lodge. He parked and found himself looking at a whole lot of green. That was the same thick pine forest he had been driving through for what seemed like forever.

Brennerman Lodge was an imposing, all wood building. That's where Joel was meeting up with his friends so they could continue on to Gabe's uncle's cabin together. They were spending Thanksgiving with some of their friends at the cabin.

Gabe had been a good friend since the start of college when he took Joel under his wing during his heady, freshman year. Now he was going to Denmark on a special study abroad program. Joel was going to miss him and so were all their mutual friends.

That's why Gabe organized this special Thanksgiving and put Joel in charge of making the turkey. The turkey was in a cooler in the trunk of Joel's car along with a bunch of other ingredients. He might have brought more than he needed, but it wasn't like he could pick up any groceries once they got to the cabin in the middle of nowhere.

Joel bundled up as he turned the engine off and got out of the car, but that didn't save him one bit. Instantly he was freezing. He couldn't believe how cold it was up here in the mountains. He jogged inside the Brennerman Lodge and Grill entrance then stopped as the door closed behind him.
