Unexpected Consequences

Brothers Chris and Danny Friessen return in a short sweet novella about unexpected consequences in their young married lives.

Chris and JD are just coming to terms with the fact that they’re married despite barely knowing each other, and JD is learning that her husband not only has a dominant alpha side but is also impatient. Can the chemistry between them be the glue that holds them together?

Meanwhile, Danny and Evie are stuck in big-city Seattle, and between law school, studying, and work, Evie can never find the right time to share a secret she knows would be more than Danny could handle.

But, as both couples soon learn, life’s little surprises could end up being a greater gift than they expected.

“Best family series ever! I love the dynamic of this powerful close family. Three brothers, a cousin, and all the spouses and children make for an interesting, spellbinding story you won’t want to put down.”

Amazon Customer

“This is a series that you will go back to time and again to reread. Lorhainne Eckhart is that type of writer. Love her stories about family and their journey. This is a great read, full of love for family that sticks together.”

Joann Moore

“I have read all of Lorhainne Eckhart’s Outsiders and Friessens books. In fact, I rarely read the same book more than once, but I have read the entire Outsiders series twice and some of the individual books more than that. Ms. Eckhart’s books are so filled with raw emotion and family relationships and all of those dynamics.”

Aherman

“This is a tight-knit family, along with their cousin Andy, his wife, and their children. The kind of family we all wish we had.”

Susan H.

Chapter One

A pink plus sign was staring back at JD from the cheap plastic stick, and it took her mind, her eyes, a minute to register what this could possibly mean.

It couldn’t be right. It had to be a mistake, considering it had happened only one time, one stupid moment in which her husband—and she was still having to remind herself of the fact that she was now Mrs. Friessen—had forgotten to wear a condom.

What was she going to do? Motherhood was nothing she’d expected at this time in her life, but she’d also never expected to be married to a man she hardly knew. She was only now discovering that the chemistry that rocked between them was basically all they had in common.

There was a knock on the bathroom door, and the knob rattled.

“JD.” Chris was on the other side, sounding impatient. That was another thing about the man that she hadn’t expected and had chalked up to a quirk of his personality, but it was turning into something that could become an issue between them, that dominant side of him that seemed to want to know what was going on with her, invading her space so much that she couldn’t breathe.

The door knob rattled again when she said nothing, still staring at the plastic stick. Then she tucked it back in its wrapper.

“Just a minute,” she said, turning on the water and then flushing the toilet, wondering what to do with the stick. She spotted the empty garbage and grabbed a wad of toilet paper to wrap it in before dumping it, and then she washed her hands.

When she opened the door, Chris was waiting there—or, rather, he was looming, his expression questioning. He stood in blue jeans and a faded T-shirt, with handsome features. The three-day whiskers he frequently had gave his face that messy, hot, and sexy look, especially with his blue eyes, which seemed so deep and mysterious.

Then there was his incredible ripped body, which didn’t give her a moment’s rest when he had her in bed, under him, driving into her and making her feel loved, special, and his. It was the only aspect of their relationship that worked, and it worked well. Sex with Chris was amazing, better than amazing, and it was the reason she was in the predicament she was.

“What were you doing in there?”

Was he serious? She shrugged and stepped around him in her sock feet, her blue jeans feeling snug and her baggy blue T-shirt hanging loose to hide the tightness in her belly.

“Bathroom, you know,” she said. She could feel him right on her heels, watching her as if he knew she was hiding something from him.

“You feeling all right? You were gone a long time.”

She wanted to roll her shoulders as she strode into the dining room and the tiny boxy kitchen of his parents’ house, listening to try to get a sense of who was there and to figure out what to say.

“Sorry, didn’t think I was that long,” she said. “So, I should start dinner before everyone starts coming in and wondering where it is.”

There, perfect change of subject. She knew she’d spent a questionably long amount of time in there, the entire time of peeing on the stick and waiting for the results, then another chunk of time from the horror of realizing her worst fear had just come true. But it had been her time, which was something Chris didn’t seem to understand, considering the first thing he’d done when he walked in the door was look for her, call for her, and seek her out.

She pulled open the fridge and lifted out the bowl of chicken pieces she’d soaked in brine overnight, then closed it to see Diana appear around the corner, glasses perched atop her head, wearing a casual gray track suit that showed off her amazing figure.

“JD, you know you don’t have to cook every night,” Diana said. “Well, I just have to say it, but at the same time, I’m so glad you have. I’m truly enjoying it, and frankly, we’re just never going to let you leave. It’s settled. You’ll have to stay here forever. My son didn’t exaggerate your culinary skills. You’re spoiling us, all of us.”

JD knew Diana was teasing, but just hearing how much she was appreciated really meant something.

Chris was leaning against the counter, taking up more than his fair share of room in the kitchen. There was limited counter space, and she’d have given anything for the workspace she’d once had in the commercial kitchen of her family’s lodge, with its gas range, commercial convection ovens, and oversized fridge. Basically, she’d have loved a kitchen where she could have the freedom to do what she wanted to do.

Chris didn’t move and was still watching her, his arms crossed, not even glancing his mom’s way, as if he hadn’t heard a word she said. “You were gone a long time, JD—and don’t think I haven’t noticed how off you’ve seemed lately.”

She could feel her jaw tighten, and she took in the way his mom was now staring from him to her as if she’d just realized something else was going on.

The door clattered, and JD heard heavy footsteps, knowing the sound of the way Jed, Chris’s dad, walked.

“What’s going on?” she heard him ask before he appeared in her line of sight beside Diana.

JD was still holding the bowl of chicken. She looked away and rested it on the counter, feeling the center of attention. “Was just about to start dinner, just a simple seasoned chicken over potatoes, carrots, beets, and onions. About fifty minutes in the oven should do it. I’ll throw together a salad with a simple vinaigrette, and we should be eating in about an hour. Oh, and I think I’ll whip up a batch of biscuits to go along with it.”

She had to stop for a second and pull in a breath, as she felt the heaviness hit her again just at the thought of food, the scent, the smell—one of the reasons she’d picked up a home pregnancy test to begin with.

“Now you’re ignoring me,” Chris said. “That’s just great, JD. I’m starting to think you’re trying to hide something.” He just didn’t let anything go, another one of his quirks that was starting to put her on edge. She’d never considered having to share every minute detail of what she was thinking or doing.

“I’m not ignoring you, Chris. I’m making dinner, is all. I’m sure everyone is hungry.”

He was more focused than a hound dog on a scent, not to be distracted. It was almost annoying, especially since she didn’t want to talk about it, not right now, considering she was still freaking out inside.

When she glanced up, she took in her husband and his parents, who were watching them as if they’d realized they may have walked in on something. By the way Jed exchanged a glance with Diana, she wondered whether they’d add something, or maybe they too would start questioning her as to what was going on.

“You’re trying to change the subject,” Chris said. “Dinner can wait. Everyone can wait.”

It wasn’t lost on her, the authoritative tone he seemed to be taking more and more with her, another quality she wasn’t sure she much liked.

“So what’s going on?” Mark said as he appeared. He had the same red hair as Chris, and she thought he’d grown an inch in the past week. “What’s for dinner?”

She wondered whether he was about to squeeze his way into the kitchen as well. The room really was made for one. “Chicken is what’s for dinner,” she said, pulling open the cupboard door and searching for a casserole dish, “and I’m doing my best to get it on and in the oven.”
