INTRODUCTION

Hypertext Markup Language (HTML), Cascading Style Sheet (CSS) and JavaScript are the three main technologies involved in the development of the World Wide Web and the overview of the different aspects of website design and development are briefly discussed below.

Static Website

Static website is the kind of website that does not require the storage of data or the use of database systems and its development involves the use of the following:

HTML

CSS

JavaScript (limited and very basic use)

Web Server

Dynamic Website

Dynamic website is the kind of website whose pages are generated in real-time. It pages are created through server-side scripts like PHP and ASP and when these pages are accessed, the code within them is parsed on the web server and the resulting html file delivered to the client’s browser.

It involves the storage of data and the use of database systems and its development involves the use of the following:

Client-side scripts (like JavaScript)

Server-side scripts (like PHP and ASP).

A back-end database (MYSQL).

Web Server

Note that instead of using the tools listed above to create a custom dynamic website from scratch, you can decide to use a website design and development Content Management System (CMS) to create the same custom website. A good example of such CMS is WordPress which is an open-source CMS based on PHP and MySQL.

Graphics Design

There may not be any primary or dedicated graphics design software for website design and development, but you can use any of the following for the works they are best suited for in creating web-optimized graphics and other contents.

Adobe Photoshop

Adobe firework

Adobe Illustrator

CorelDraw

File Transfer

This is the process of uploading the contents of a website from the developer’s computer to the server of the webhost and it involves the use of File Transfer Protocol (FTP) software like FireFTP or Filezila.

Promoting

It is important to let people who might be interested in the website to know that it exists. You can do this by first informing those in your circle such that they serve as the first set of users once it is Live during the Testing phase. They will later also help spread the word about it and hence bringing other early users onboard through word of mouth.

Once the website’s functionality is confirmed, you can then use any of the methods below to further spread the word about it.

Submit to Search engines

Google Adword

Paid lists (email marketing)

Social media Ads (Facebook, Twitter etc)

Forums

The list above is not exhaustive and this manual will focus on static website design and development and a bit of dynamic content through JavaScript.
