Either this would be the biggest mistake of her life, or it could turn out to be the best decision she’d ever made, Paige thought as she stared up at the screen displaying all the airlines and departure gates. The flight she was booked on was now boarding. She stared at the ticket she hadn’t purchased and the note that was attached to it.
I can’t get you out of my mind. —M.
After all, who sent notes anymore?
Apparently Morgan, and what the hell was she doing but standing in an airport, watching the last five people at the gate hand over their tickets and stride down the ramp to board the plane to Boston?
Maybe she should send him another text or pull out her phone and reread his last five again—all to confirm that she’d got the ticket, she was coming, and he’d be waiting at the airport to pick her up. It was just nerves, she reminded herself, about twenty feet from the counter.
Her feet suddenly wouldn’t move as she stood there in her sandals, holding the ticket, her other hand squeezing the handle of her small, dated cloth suitcase, the kind with only two wheels, but only one really worked. The other was likely jammed or something, which had her dragging the bag more than gracefully wheeling it.
It was now or never. She could turn around and leave this airport, load her suitcase back into her older-model Honda and drive home, and say what to her parents? Oops, changed my mind, not going on that five-day holiday after all! Then she’d, what, hang around and do nothing? She’d also booked a week off from her job, a job she hated as a payroll clerk for a local grocery chain. Yeah, no.
So she pulled in a breath, gave her luggage a yank, and started to the desk, holding out the ticket and seeing the sticky note still taped to it. She let go of her bag, and it toppled over backwards, clattering on the concrete floor. She ripped off the note before handing the ticket and her ID to the airline employee.
“Thank you, Miss Jenkins-Morris,” he said, flashing her a smile. “They’re just about to close the doors.”
She shoved her wallet back into her bulky beige purse and slung it over her shoulder before taking the ticket. Then she reached down, picked up her suitcase, and started dragging it down the ramp, the entire time wondering if she’d lost her mind.
She pushed down her handle at the door to the plane as the stewardess tossed her an easy smile.
“You just made it,” she said. “Was just about to close the door. Do you have your ticket?”
“Right here.” Paige held it up.
“3B, that’s right there,” the stewardess said, gesturing to a seat in executive class as she handed the ticket back to Paige.
For a second, as she stared at what looked like the jam-packed coach and half-empty first class, she was positive there was some mistake.
“If you could take your seat…” the stewardess said, prompting her again to the third row on the left and the empty two seats. Paige was about to say something about the mistake when the stewardess said, “Can I help you with your bag?”
Paige lifted the suitcase, moving down the aisle, bumping the guy in the row before her. “No, it’s fine, I’ll just…” She pressed the button for the closed compartment and saw it was jammed full. Obviously why it was closed.
“Here, let me.” The stewardess reached for her suitcase and shoved it in the compartment across the aisle as Paige scooted into her large, roomy executive-class seat and shoved her purse under the seat in front of her. She fastened her belt just as she saw the airplane door close.
