Carving a Community
Every issue of
WCI
brings inspiration from fellow carvers,
as well as a quick view of what’s happening within the
community. In this issue, please enjoy our coverage of the
Carvin’ the Rockies show (page 10) held days before we went
to press. Our very own Dorissa Bolinski traveled to Colorado
Springs, Colo. to experience firsthand the amazing passion
and devotion shared by members of the Caricature Carvers of
America (CCA) who hosted the event. Shows like Carvin’ the
Rockies are preserving the art of woodcarving for generations to come.
Nothing beats the chance to convene with fellow carving devotees
while learning from seasoned pros.
Whether you’re a beginner or have been carving for years, I
encourage everyone to join the woodcarving community, which takes
many forms from multinational online groups to large and small local
clubs all with one thing in common—to inspire members. If you have
the chance, do attend one of the many carving shows that take place
throughout the year (page 77). If your local area doesn’t have a show or
club, it’s an opportunity to bring people together who share a common
love of wood carving. A simple post on local social media or even a few
sign-up sheets around town can get the ball rolling.
As this issue attests, the woodcarving community is alive and well
within
WCI's
pages. Capture the priceless expression and posture of
Rich Wetherbee’s “Christmas Mornin’ Bear” on the cover (page 30). For
a more traditional holiday piece, Dale Green’s “Santa’s Journey Home”
(page 14) features expert carving techniques and visual balance that
takes the eye from the star atop the staff to Santa’s face and then out to
his arms and hands. And the holidays wouldn’t be complete without
carving a traditional “Christmas Pickle” for the tree (page 48).
Whether you’re carving style is low relief, chip, or whittling, we’ve
got something for you between these pages from some of today’s most
innovative carvers.
From the entire staff of WCI and Fox Chapel Publishing, Happy Holidays!

Sweeping with Woodchips
After seeing Ken Kuhar’s “Little Dustpan
Caricature” from
issue #107, I decided to carve
these little brooms and dustpans. I ended up
making them into refrigerator magnets.
Danny Thomas
Oxford, N.C.
Bringing Out the Artist in You
After three years of carving and painting, we finally
finished Betty Padden’s “Mythical Woodland Cottage”
(issues #90 and #91). We have been lucky enough to
attend classes at the Wooden Apple Signmakers with
Betty and Bob Padden for almost 30 years! We always
say, ‘Betty brings out the artist in you!’
Linda and Steve Ducharme
Rochdale, Mass.
Hot Off the Branch
During last Christmas,
I decided to carve James
Spencer’s “Tree Man
Ornament” from issue #105. It
was by far my most popular gift
item. I ended up carving a ton
of them! Thanks to James (and
to
WCI
) for the idea!
Ryan Newsome
Littleton, N.C.
Starting Young
I began woodworking a few
years ago when I was 11 years
old. The first
WCI
magazine
I ever received was issue #99
where I became captivated
with Charles Banks’ “Carving
a Flat-Plane Character.” I loved
it so much that after a couple
of tweaks, I tried to recreate it
to the best of my ability.
Miles Stock
Holland, Mich.
Ready for a Swim
After seeing Matt
Kincade’s “Snorkeling
Gnome” in issue #99,
I decided that project
would be my next
carve. I put a swimming
cap on my gnome and
added ocean waves and
sea creatures.

The Season of Giving
I recently carved my version of Shawn Cipa’s
“Woodcarving the Nativity in the Folk Art Style” (issue
#25). I carved all the pieces, and my wife Michelle painted
them. We ended up gifting it to my sister-in-law once it
was finished.

Olga Golovanova
Protvino, Russia
Even after entering the engineering field, Olga Golovanova
dreamed of being an artist. Then she discovered
woodcarving. “Woodcarving perfectly combines my
mathematical skills and three-dimensional thinking with my
creative side,” she said. Her carvings are often inspired by
the fall season; however, Olga plans to turn her carving skills
toward making wooden toys for her young child. To see more
of Olga’s work, visit @_oli.wood_ on Instagram.
Cheryl Coupland
Foam Lake, Saskatchewan
For Cheryl Coupland, woodcarving creates a sense of
solace. “Carving is just calming, and for just those few
moments or hours, the world takes care of itself,” she
said. Since retiring, Cheryl spends her days creating
wooden works with her husband Nelson. Contact
her art.
Szymon Młynarczyk
Oban, Scotland
Szymon Młynarczyk often finds inspiration for
his next woodcarving projects while exploring
local Scottish beaches, lakes, and mountains for
driftwood. “I have always had a close relationship
with nature; it fuels my imagination and my
carvings,” he said. Since 2018, Szymon has used
carving—especially power carving—as a creative
outlet. It allows Szymon to efficiently shape
the driftwood and transform it into his nature-
inspired carvings. See more of Szymon’s work at
simonswoodcraft.com.
