Book Abstract for Men Are from Mars, Women Are from Venus

John Gray grew up with five brothers and was celibate after becoming a monk and living around men. When he started being around women, he admitted how he would think they were from a different planet. Some of the ideas in his bestselling book were drawn from the challenges he has faced.

When the American relationship counselor, lecturer, and author, Dr. John Gray first started discussing gender diversity in the early '80s, saying "it was very challenging because at that time it was very politically incorrect." At that time, he was trying to find a way to "lighten up" the matter at his relationship workshops.

One night, Gray told the women in the audience how their husbands were like E.T. – from a different planet, with different needs, speaking a foreign language. The women laughed, and one dared to ask, "Where's my husband from?" The counselor quickly responds, "Mars." By then, he knew he had a hook; he recalled having goosebumps, the hair on his arms raising. The concept of women coming from Venus – the planet associated with love – came afterward.
