Madeline Miller is an American novelist born in Boston and raised in New York City and Philadelphia. Miller went on to teach Latin, Greek, and Shakespeare to high school students after earning a bachelor's and master's degree in Classics from Brown University in 2000 and 2001, respectively. As part of her preparation for a Ph.D., she also spent a year studying at the University of Chicago's Committee on Social Thought. From 2009 to 2010, she pursued an MFA in Dramaturgy and Dramatic Criticism at the Yale School of Drama in New Haven, Connecticut.
Miller is the author of the novels The Song of Achilles (2011) and Circe (2018). Her essays have also been featured in notable publications such as The Guardian, The Wall Street Journal, Lapham's Quarterly, and NPR, amongst many others. In an interview with The Guardian, Miller stated that some of her literary influences were Cloud Atlas author David Mitchell and the Roman poet Virgil.
