James Brendan Patterson, Jr. is a prolific American author best known for his thriller and suspense novels. His vast oeuvre and business savvy made him ubiquitous on bestseller lists in the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. Patterson was a Ph.D. candidate at Vanderbilt University when he landed a position in advertising and marketing. He worked as an advertising executive for the J. Walter Thompson Corporation. After he left the advertising industry in 1996, he concentrated his efforts on writing. A dark crime book entitled The Thomas Berryman Number (1976), his first effort at literature earned him the Edgar Allan Poe Award for a best first novel from the Mystery Writers of America. Following it, more books in a similar vein were published. Among his many works are the Alex Cross, Michael Bennett, Women's Murder Club, Maximum Ride, Daniel X, NYPD Red, Witch and Wizard, and Private series, several standalone thrillers, non-fiction books, and romance novels. His novels have sold an estimated 400 million copies worldwide, and he was the first individual to sell one million ebooks. Patterson topped Forbes' list of highest-paid writers for the third year in a row in 2016, earning $95 million.
