Workforce members enjoy unprecedented flexibility in that they can work from home, during hours that work for them – with no commute involved. A remote workforce can help employers cut costs, access talent anywhere without worrying about geography, and eliminate a fair amount of overhead cost as well.

There are many ways to ensure that the transition from a typical workplace setting to remote work is as smooth and effortless as possible. Here are a few things to consider before beginning such a transition:
Consider if you believe the team can succeed, and what their assets are. How can they transition well to this role? If they are ready to transition, consider why. Perhaps write these reasons down for your own reference.
If you don’t yet believe your team is ready, consider the reasons you don’t yet feel they are. For each reason you don’t believe your team is ready, consider what action items would be necessary for this belief to change. For each reason that you identify, think of the following:
what is keeping that possibility from becoming a reality?
What can you personally do to change this?
Get the ball rolling on each possibility you can initiate or facilitate in some way.
Also, consider the following: can you rely on your team members to be consistent, follow through, and be flexible enough to succeed through this transition?
Whether you believe you can or not, write out the reasons you have in mind.
For each reason you don’t yet have trust, consider the changes you would need to happen before you’d be able to believe fully. What could you do to change these things, or initiate trust?
The following tools are essential for success in a remote setting. Ensure your employees have access to or could easily obtain the following:
A smartphone, computer and any accessories needed for the monitor or keyboard, headset, modem for Wi-Fi connection, webcam, a place to work is suitably lit for video or conference calls, company email and server, access to phone numbers, files, URLS, VPN access, remote work space, space good for Co Working, conference room (optional)
Having access to the above items at baseline will be critical for remote workforce success.
Provide training on how and when to use the above tools; be willing to invest in training that will help empower and educate your workforce. The return on this investment has been proven, as it will work for you in the future! Check in with everyone to provide extra support when and if needed. Make sure to support your workforce during this transition, as it will be new for all of you.
To share these tools with your workforce, you will have to become familiar with these practices and tools first. Consider which tools and practices will be best integrated into your remote systems, considering your personnel, objectives, and limitations – take notes and ask questions along the way.
