“Yacht Design, Interior and Superstructures” confirms the interest of young architects, engineers and designers in boat design, a subject always in need of new ideas, new design solutions and a new approach. This new approach is meant to be applied to expertise in new technologies, new materials and knowledge of new markets, which are getting to know this field with experience and a cultural background completely different from what we have been used to so far, rather than to planning. The IED Interior Yacht Design and Superstructures specialization course approach to these new subjects has evolved and adapted to market needs with the aim of perfecting the profile of professional yacht designers and adapt it to the contemporary market requirements. A market that has never evolved as quickly as in the recent years before, following the new social and cultural trends dictated both by users and manufacturers and thus generating new patterns, new ways of interpreting boating and staying on board. This evolution is partly due to the economic crisis and partly to a new cultural approach to living between air and water and is giving birth to new interesting boat types. These show that mainly shipowners but also, consequently, enlightened designers and shipbuilders are increasingly aware of the fact that the boat, as an object, can no longer be considered only as a symbol of economic power and the ability of its designer to impress boat lovers, but also as a tool to enjoy the sea and leisure time in a more relaxed, less public and more private, less polluting and more environmentally friendly way. To me – first as a professional and then as a teacher – these signs of change are a strong stimulus to search for new forms and new content, indicating that it is necessary to invest in oneself and one’s professional expertise to cater for new needs. If this is true for professionals at an advanced stage of their carriers, it is even more crucial for young designers who will need to “attack” a much more selective market from a technical and design point of view and more difficult from an economic perspective. Young designers will essentially need totake a new look at a peculiar kind of architecture, i.e. naval architecture in the years to come. One of its distinguishing traits will certainly be sustainability. We are still at the beginning of it, but a renewal process has now begun. Until a few years ago it seemed impossible that a luxury sector like boating could involve sustainability and energy saving. Now they have become a reality which shipowners, designers and shipbuilders are facing, just like in the case of many other fields of architecture and design.

Antonio Venece (1972) School Manager

di IED Roma si laurea in Scienze Politi-

che all’Università degli Studi di Roma La

Sapienza e si specializza con un master

in Studi europei e relazioni internazionali

all’Institut Européen des Hautes Etudes

Internationales di Nizza e un dottorato

all’Universität Wien (Vienna). A Bruxelles,

tra il 1997 e il 1999, collabora con la Com-

missione Europea, ex direzione generale

cultura, come Project Manager all’Euro-

pean Movement - Mouvement Européen.

Tra il 1999 e il 2001 è consigliere del

sottosegretario al Ministero dell’Istruzio-

ne, Università e Ricerca a Roma dove si occupa della creazione

dell’IST, Istituto Superiore per lo sviluppo del terzo settore, con

focus sulle nuove professioni del non profit. Negli stessi anni è

membro del Team Europeo occupandosi di progetti di formazio-

ne e animazione sui programmi dell’UE. Dal 2003 al 2012 lavora

a Milano presso l’Ufficio International Affairs della Presidenza

del gruppo IED occupandosi di internazionalizzazione e rapporti

accademici internazionali. Dal 2012 dirige la sede romana

dell’Istituto Europeo di Design, in qualità di School Manager. Nel

2013 ha gestito il progetto di creazione e lancio della nuova area

Cinema e New Media.

Antonio Venece (1972), School Manager at IED Rome, graduated

from La Sapienza University, Rome, with a degree in Political

Science and specialized in “European Studies and International

Relations” at the Institut Européen des Hautes Etudes Internatio-

nales, Nice. He also obtained a PhD at Universität Wien (Vienna).

He worked as Project Manager of the European Movement - Mouve-

ment Européen at the former European Commission DG Culture, in

Brussels, from 1997 to 1999. From 1999 to 2001 he was adviser

to the undersecretary at the Ministry of Education, University and

Research, in Rome, where he was responsible for setting up the

IST (Istituto Superiore per lo sviluppo del terzo settore, the Higher

Institute for the Development of the Voluntary Sector) focusing

on the new non-profit sector professions. In those years he was

also member of the Team Europe and was in charge of training

and participation projects related to EU programmes. From 2003

to 2012 he worked in Milan at the International Affairs Office of

the IED Group Presidency and was responsible for internationa-

lization and international academic relations. As School Manager

he has directed the IED Rome seat since 2012. He set up and

launched the new Cinema and New Media area in 2013.

Il secondo volume del libro Yacht Design - Interni e Sovrastrut-

ture nasce dall’idea, proposta dall’architetto Paperini e sup-

portata con entusiasmo dalla Direzione Accademica, di dare

vita a una collana di libri dedicati al master in Interior Yacht

Design e Sovrastrutture nato ormai 10 anni fa allo IED di Roma.

Un volume che si arricchisce quest’anno di un ulteriore signifi-

cato: testimoniare la vitalità di una realtà formativa che compie

40 anni dalla sua fondazione a Roma nel 1973. Il master, fiore

all’occhiello della nostra offerta formativa, ha portato negli anni

a risultati eccellenti, che meritano di essere divulgati e condivi-

si, sia per i nostri studenti, dotati di grande talento e motivazio-

ne, sia per il nostro pubblico esterno di professionisti, di amanti

del design, di persone che semplicemente vogliono avvicinarsi

al mondo del design degli interni e delle sovrastrutture nella

nautica. Allo IED di Roma siamo ben consapevoli del grande

patrimonio che possediamo, costituito dai lavori realizzati dai

nostri studenti e dai professionisti che li seguono e ci rendiamo

conto dell’importanza di comunicarli all’esterno. Questa collana

The second volume of the Interior Yacht Design book stems

from Architect Paperini’s idea of publishing a series of books

dedicated to the Interior Design and Superstructures speciali-

zation course launched 10 years ago by IED in Rome. The Insti-

tute management has enthusiastically supported his idea. This

volume gains a new and specific meaning in 2013: it testifies

the liveliness of an educational institution that this year cele-

brates 40 years from its foundation in Rome in 1973. Over the

years IED flagship Interior Yacht Design specialization course

has achieved excellent results that need to be disseminated and

shared for the benefit of both our extremely talented and mo-

tivated students and their external audience of professionals,

design lovers, people who simply want to approach the world of

boat interior design and superstructures. We are fully aware of

the huge heritage we own, consisting of the projects carried out

by our students and the professionals supporting them. Since

we conceive the European Institute of Design as a big incubator

of projects, we also understand the importance of showing them

attuale e imprescindibile il rapporto con le tantissime aziende

che ogni anno intervengono nella definizione dei progetti con

cui gli studenti IED si misurano. La collaborazione con le realtà

produttive rappresenta per noi un aspetto fondamentale dell’at-

tività progettuale perché permette ai nostri studenti di avvici-

narsi al tanto temuto mondo del lavoro in una fase in cui sono

ancora seguiti dai docenti, professionisti anche loro, e possono

sperimentare con libertà soluzioni e idee che, come vedrete,

continuano a regalarci lavori di livello straordinario.

in 40 years. Nowadays the relationship with several companies

involved every year in planning the projects our students will

be facing, is all the more important and unavoidable. Partner-

ships with manufacturing organizations are a basic feature of

our planning because they allow our students to approach the

so dreaded labour market when they are still supported by their

teachers – who are professionals themselves – and to freely

experiment ideas and solutions that, as you will see, keep on

offering us toplevel projects.

Fondatore dello studio Duck Design. Ini-

zia la sua attività di progettista navale

nel 1980, dedicandosi alla progettazio-

ne di imbarcazioni a vela da crociera e

da regata. È stato consulente FIV pres-

so l'ORC di Londra per i regolamenti di

stazza e Team Manager per i Campionati

del Mondo di Vela d'Altura e all'Admiral's

Cup. Nel suo studio di Roma, nei pressi di

Piazza di Spagna, ha progettato yacht a

vela che hanno vinto numerosi premi e

tre Campionati del Mondo e yacht a mo-

tore vincitori del World Yachts Trophy. Il

lavoro dello studio attualmente è rivolto

a nuovi progetti di maxi yacht a vela e a motore ed al refitting

e restauro di barche d’epoca. Il grande lavoro di ricerca portato

avanti, di recente, nel campo delle imbarcazioni a motore ha

prodotto nuovi progetti di Motor Yacht che si distinguono per

comfort, eleganza e prestazioni. Ad oggi sono state varate oltre

400 imbarcazioni, one-off e di serie, che portano la sua firma.

Dal 2004 è coordinatore del master in Interior Yacht Design e

Sovrastrutture presso lo IED di Roma. Da alcuni anni insegna

architettura navale e design presso la Facoltà di Architettura

di Roma Tre e il Politecnico di Milano. Per Mondadori Electa ha

pubblicato Interior Yacht Design - Abitare tra cielo e acqua e per

Alinea, Yacht Design - Interni e Sovrastrutture.

Founder of the Duck Design studio. He began working as a naval

architect in 1980, devoting himself to the design of sailboats for

cruising and racing. He was Italian Sailing Federation consultant

with the London ORC in rating rules, and Team Manager for the

Offshore Sailing World Championships and the Admiral's Cup. In

his studio in Rome near the Spanish Steps, he designed sailing

yachts, which are have won numerous awards and three World

Championships, as well as motor yachts which were World Yachts

Trophy winners. The studio's work is currently geared towards

new Maxi sailing yacht and motor yacht projects and the refit-

ting and restoration of classic yachts. The large research project

recently brought to fruition in the motorboat craft sector has led

to new Motor Yacht designs which stand out in terms of comfort,

elegance and performance. To date more than 400 boats have

been launched, one-off as well as series boats, bearing his si-

gnature. Since 2004 he has been coordinator of the Master’s in

Yacht Interior and Superstructure Design at IED in Rome; he has

taught naval architecture and design for a number of years at

the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Rome III, and at

Milan Politechnic. He has published Interior Yacht Design - Abita-

re tra cielo e acqua (Dwelling between sky and water) for Monda-

dori Electa and for Alinea, Yacht Design - Interni e Sovrastrutture.

Questo secondo volume Yacht Design - Interni e Sovrastrutture

conferma l'interesse di giovani architetti, ingegneri e designer

verso il design nautico, disciplina che necessita sempre di

nuove idee, nuove soluzioni progettuali ed un nuovo approccio

alla materia. Questo approccio è inteso, non tanto dal punto di

vista del metodo progettuale, quanto della competenza in

nuove tecnologie, nuovi materiali e della conoscenza di nuovi

mercati, che si avvicinano a questo settore con un bagaglio cul-

turale e di esperienze completamente diverso da quello con cui

siamo stati abituati a confrontarci sino ad oggi. All'interno del

master il nostro approccio a queste nuove problematiche si è

evoluto, puntando a perfezionare la figura professionale dello

yacht designer e ad adeguarla alle richieste del mercato con-

temporaneo. Un mercato che mai come in questi anni più recenti

è cambiato così rapidamente e si è adeguato alle nuove pro-

spettive culturali e sociali sia dell'utente che del produttore,

generando così nuove tipologie, nuovi modi di interpretare la

nautica e vivere la permanenza a bordo. Questi segnali, ora

scaturiti dalla crisi economica, ora da un nuovo approccio cultu-

rale al vivere tra aria e acqua, stanno configurando nuovi inte-

ressanti profili di tipologie nautiche. Profili che segnalano una

forte presa di coscienza principalmente da parte degli armatori

ma di conseguenza da parte anche di progettisti e costruttori

illuminati, del fatto che l'oggetto barca può essere interpretato

non più solo come simbolo della potenza economica e della

capacità del designer di stupire, ma anche come uno strumento

per vivere il mare ed il tempo libero in un modo più rilassato,

meno pubblico e più privato, meno inquinante e più rispettoso

dell'ambiente. Questi segnali di cambiamento, per me, come

professionista prima e come docente poi, si configurano come

forti stimoli verso la ricerca di nuove forme e nuovi contenuti

evidenziando la necessità di investire su sé stessi e sulla

propria competenza professionale per dare nuove risposte a

nuove esigenze. Se questo vale per un professionista in una

fase matura della propria attività professionale, vale doppia-

mente per un giovane designer che dovrà aggredire un mercato

più selettivo sia dal punto di vista tecnico che del design, più

critico dal punto di vista economico ma che principalmente

dovrà vedere con occhi nuovi un particolare tipo di architettura:

l'architettura navale degli anni a venire. Uno degli aspetti che

caratterizzerà l'architettura navale è senza dubbio la sostenibi-

lità del progetto. Siamo ancora agli inizi ma il processo di rinno-

vamento è ormai iniziato. Fino a qualche anno fa sembrava im-

possibile che un settore del lusso come quello della nautica

potesse avvicinarsi alla sostenibilità ed al risparmio energeti-

co, oggi è diventata una realtà con cui si stanno confrontando

armatori, progettisti e costruttori così come accade in molte

altre discipline dell'architettura e del design. Si sta assistendo
