Chapter One

Some Very Bad News

Zoe Parker hung the leaf garland on the gates and stepped back to check her work. In two weeks’ time the Rescue Zoo would be holding their Fall Festival and Zoe and the zoo staff were busy decorating in preparation. She’d strung the golden leaves all around the zoo’s front gates and added little paper acorns for extra cheer. 2

“I can’t wait for the caramel apples,” Zoe’s pet mouse lemur Meep chirped from her coat pocket.

“The Fall Festival isn’t just about food, Meep,” Zoe giggled, but she was already thinking about the hot chocolate and the fried doughnuts with sugar they’d be serving at the café just for that weekend. She understood everything Meep said because Zoe had a special secret. She could understand animals and talk to them. Nobody knew about her secret – not even her mum, Lucy, or her Great-Uncle Horace, who owned the Rescue Zoo.

Mr Pinch, the zoo manager, came marching over. As usual, he was frowning. “You need to move that leaf, Zoe,” he said, pointing at the gate. He took a ruler from his pocket and held it next to the leaf. 3“It’s not hanging perfectly straight.”

Zoe was going to say that real leaves on trees never hung perfectly straight, but then she remembered how fussy Mr Pinch was. He always liked things to be as neat and tidy as possible. “If you insist,” she said, before straightening the leaf. 4

Mr Pinch went over to check on the pumpkin display and Meep scrambled out of Zoe’s pocket.

“Oh, no!” he yelped as he fell on the ground, landing on his back with his legs in the air.

“Are you OK, Meep?” Zoe asked, crouching beside him.

“Yes, I’m just practising,” he chirped cheerily.

“What for?” Zoe helped him back up.

“The Fall Festival!” Meep began snorting with laughter. Then he fell over again. “I’m falling, see?”

“Oh, Meep!” Zoe groaned. “It’s not a festival about falling, it’s about celebrating 5 the time of the year. Autumn is sometimes called ‘fall’ as it’s when all the leaves fall from the trees.”

Lucy, Zoe’s mum, came over to join them. She was with the koala’s keeper, Joy.

“Joy’s going to be doing a koala meet-and-greet at the festival this year,” Lucy said.

“That’s so cool!” Zoe grinned. “My friends from school are going to love that. This year’s festival is going to be the best ever!”

But just then Sally, the café manager, came running over. “There’s been a disaster!” she cried.

“Please don’t tell me that corner table is wobbling again,” Mr Pinch muttered. “I spent all morning fixing it.” 6

“Worse than that,” Sally replied. “Much worse.”

Zoe’s heart sank. What could have happened?

“A pipe in the café ceiling leaked overnight,” Sally continued. “The whole kitchen is flooded.”

Mr Pinch gave a long loud toot on the whistle he wore around his neck. “Attention, everybody! We have an emergency!” he shouted. “A tidying-up emergency. Everyone to the café now to help, please.”

“I hope it isn’t too bad,” Zoe said to Lucy as they hurried along the cobbled path leading through the zoo. Meep scampered along at their feet.

“Me too,” said Lucy. “Especially with the festival happening soon. We’ll need the 7 café more than ever with so many hungry people to feed.”

As soon as they got to the café, Zoe’s heart sank. Water was streaming out of the door, forming a puddle on the ground outside.

“Yikes!” Meep yelped, scrambling up into Zoe’s coat pocket. “I can’t swim.”

“I don’t think it’s deep enough to need to swim, Meep,” Zoe whispered, but as they went inside she couldn’t help gasping. The café floor was soaking wet and the kitchen at the back was even worse. There’d been so much water, it had made the ceiling collapse and there were broken ceiling panels everywhere.

“Oh, no!” Mr Pinch exclaimed as he looked at the soggy plaster covering the oven and the kitchen counters. 8

“Don’t worry, Mr Pinch, we can clean up the mess,” Zoe said.

“It’s not the mess,” he said sadly. “It’s the ceiling. There’s no way we’ll be able to fix it in time for the festival.”

“But what about hot chocolate?” Sally said.

“We won’t be able to make it,” Mr Pinch replied. “And we won’t be able to have any food either.” He gave 9 a big sigh. “And if we can’t sell food and drink at the Fall Festival, we’ll lose so much money we won’t be able to pay for the repairs. The café might have to stay closed for the rest of the year.”

Meep gave a sad squeak.

Zoe looked at her mum. She was looking just as grim-faced as Mr Pinch. This was very bad news indeed!

Chapter Two

A Sad Arrival

“Oh, my poor café!” Sally cried.

Zoe ran over and gave her a hug. “I’m so sorry, Sally.”

“Thank you, Zoe.” Sally smiled, but Zoe could see that her eyes were shiny with tears.

“Shall we clean up some of the mess?” Zoe asked. 11

Mr Pinch shrugged. “If you like, but it won’t make any difference. The café will still have to stay closed.”

Zoe stared at him, shocked. She’d never heard him sound so glum about tidying up!

Mr Pinch went to turn off the water supply to the café while Zoe, Lucy and Sally put the chairs on the tables and began mopping the floor. Meep sat on a shelf with his head in his paws.

“This is the saddest day ever,” he squeaked.

“Don’t worry, Meep, we’ll still have the Fall Festival,” Zoe said, going over to comfort him.

“But without any food!” he squeaked sadly. “And a Fall Festival without food is like –” he scratched his head – “it’s like a 12zoo without animals!”

Zoe stroked his silky grey fur. She really wished she could cheer him up. Then she heard a familiar low whirring sound from outside.
