Charlotte Brontë was an English novelist and poet, regarded as one of the most important figures of Victorian literature. Born in Thornton, Yorkshire, she is especially remembered for her novel Jane Eyre (1847), a work that blends Gothic, romantic, and social elements, and that established Brontë as an author of great originality and psychological depth. In 1846, the three Brontë sisters published a book of poems under male pseudonyms: Currer, Ellis, and Acton Bell. Although the volume went largely unnoticed, it marked the beginning of their literary careers. The following year, Charlotte published Jane Eyre, a novel that achieved immediate success thanks to its emotional intensity, the complexity of its characters, and its bold engagement with issues such as womanhood, independence, and the social tensions of the time. Charlotte Brontë's work stood out for offering an innovative view of women's inner lives and for questioning the limitations imposed by Victorian society. Jane Eyre, in particular, is considered a pioneering work of literary feminism, portraying a protagonist who fights for her moral and emotional autonomy. Although her life was brief, Brontë's influence spanned generations. Her ability to weave together the intimate and the social, the Gothic and the realistic, secured her place among the great names of world literature.
