Valerio Varesi became a journalist in 1985 and is currently working on the Bologna section of La Repubblica. His first book was published in 1998 and he is the author of 16 detective novels starring Commissario Soneri. 'River of Shadows' was nominated for the prestigious Italian literary prize, 'Strega' and also for a Gold Dagger award in Britain. His novels about the gourmet detective are usually set in the area around the Po Valley including the provinces of Parma and Piacenza and the River Po plays a constant and important role. Four of his novels, including 'River of Shadows', have been adapted for the Italian TV series 'Nebbie e delitti'. Varesi has also written historical-political novels including 'Trilogia di una Repubblica'. Five of his Soneri novels have already been published in English by Maclehose Press.
