Advanced Spanish Grammar: A Self-Teaching Guide explores topics that were first introduced in Practical Spanish Grammar more deeply, but can also compliment any other first-year text. This book aims to bring the user to an Intermediate-Low or Intermediate-Mid level of Spanish on the American Council of Teachers of Foreign Language (ACTFL) scale. Speakers at this level of proficiency are often set apart from the novice speakers in their creative ability with the language, going beyond discussions of themselves to talking about friends and family, and the experiences, preferences, and needs of others alongside their own, with much of this speech restricted to the sentence-level. Your level of comfort with the language at either of these levels has much to do with the amount of time that you give to practice and review of the material.
Self-directed learning has become an increasingly common language learning approach. It requires that you as the learner be responsible for selecting and learning from any available input in the second language (e.g., audiovisual materials, print/online newspapers and magazines) that helps you learn. You can stop, review, and delve even deeper into topics, something that might not have been possible in a classroom setting. This also requires that the book be an accurate and detailed source material, as the learner may not have immediate assistance if they have questions. As a result, this edition has been heavily reviewed and rewritten to ensure that the most error-free material is available for the learner all throughout the text. With respect to the content of this book, you may find it beneficial to start from the very beginning or jump to the point where you feel that you need the most help or review and continue from there. There is no wrong way to use this text. Nonetheless, there are ways that you can help your acquisition of the language. These will be discussed more in depth later under the section “Helpful Pointers.”
Finally, it is important to discuss the varieties of the Spanish language that will be used in this text. It is worth pointing out that Spanish is the fourth most spoken language in the world, with over 500 million speakers across all continents and is the official language in over 20 countries. As a result, each dialect of Spanish will be considered throughout the text. This text will not only observe the recommendations for usage that come from the Real Academia Española, but will also address modern usage, such as inclusive language, that operate outside of formal and prescriptive rules.
The incoming author’s own experience as a self-directed learner and current university-level language educator with years of experience teaching across all levels and both inside and outside of the classroom allows for an updated perspective on the uses of this text as well as the material that has been included.
A significant amount of the content found in the previous edition has been kept and updated wherever necessary. Each lesson contains a vocabulary list of approximately thirty-five useful words, followed by a section called Notas, which includes linguistic and cultural notes related to the chapter vocabulary. There are also exercises for practicing and reinforcing the vocabulary and, wherever necessary, additions have been made to include more cultural considerations. There is also a section on grammar, followed by practice activities as well as activities to practice the structures that have been introduced. The answers to exams and activities can be found at the end of every exam. Like other intermediate level books, this text is written in Spanish to help maximize the amount of Spanish that you are exposed to.
As this is an advanced text, it is entirely written in Spanish. While this may be jarring at first, there is a benefit to this approach; you are forced to use your skills of deduction and reasoning to comprehend the vocabulary and grammar explanations as well as the instructions for the activities. As you grow in your linguistic knowledge and experience with the language, reading the text in Spanish will become less difficult. As mentioned earlier, you are encouraged to expand upon your linguistic experiences by branching out into your interests and listening and reading as much as you can in Spanish.
All grammar explanations have been updated based on linguistic theory and language pedagogy, but presented simply and with considerations of cultural variation where necessary.
Exercises and exam answers have been updated to reflected changes in the main text.
Make flashcards or write out challenging vocabulary for practice. You can also write out grammar examples and attempt making sentences on your own that a native speaker could check. The process of writing out words and sentences has been shown to aid in committing these items to memory more effectively than if you just read them.
Do the exercises one at a time and check your answers right away. This immediate feedback is an important factor in your learning process and a feature of this approach to language learning. Writing out your corrected errors and attempting to explain to yourself why they were wrong can be very helpful as you improve your language skills.
Master all the material before you proceed. If you miss three or more answers in an exercise, go back and review the vocabulary or grammar explanation.
Review the previous material before taking the test at the end of each group of lessons. About one-third of each of these tests is on vocabulary and the other two-thirds are on grammar. Your goal should be to score at least 80 percent, the equivalent to a B.
Advanced Spanish Grammar can be used in any intermediate college course. This text follows an order common in most universities, particularly in the United States. It can be used effectively as a supplementary workbook for students in Basic or Intermediate language programs, where the student might need some extra practice with grammar points and course time doesn’t present the most ideal time for review. This is true even in those courses at the second or third year, where the course’s focus is composition, conversation, or reading. This text can provide additional opportunities for practice.
