AND THE MOUNTAINS ECHOED HAS SET ITSELF UP TO cover a wide scope and is a family drama at its core. The book begins with an Afghan fairy tale about a father who gives up his favorite son to a div in order to save his other children. In the very next chapter, the father telling the story is selling off his daughter to a wealthy family in Kabul so that he can feed the rest of his family. Pari, the daughter who is sold off, and Abdullah, her devoted brother, are separated. This leads to a chain of events that have far-reaching effects on people in different corners of the world.
There are a number of characters in this book whose backgrounds are discussed in detail. These characters come together to form a complete story, from the pulling apart of Pari and Abdullah to their reunion after years of separation. They all have different lives and live in different corners of the world, but this common past pulls them together and binds them in ways even they do not actively comprehend.
The book explores fatherhood and motherhood. How far can one go in sacrificing one child to save the others? When does too much pride, as a father and a man, become a curse to others? How far can a father protect his daughter from herself, especially if he doesn’t approve of her life or beliefs? Can one be a good mother if you are ashamed of your child’s problems? How far can parents impose upon their children? There are also questions raised about how to deal with a beloved parent who turns out to have feet of clay. And finally, how much responsibility should those who have moved away take for the problems of Afghanistan?
