Jay Wells is your ordinary, average, somewhat shy, African American young man of twenty-six. He’s a college student majoring in electronics trying to earn his bachelors degree. His parents were killed in a car crash some years ago and his grandfather, who’s now in a senior home, was left to raise him. Jay lives in the city of Detroit where the cars are hot and the city is working, but in this time the people are getting scarce. Jay works at a television, VCR, video game system, repair shop. Jay lives alone where his favorite past times are watching movies, video games, reading, going camping, and spending time with his grandfather and his friend Charles. One personal problem Jay has is that he’s very skinny and for years has been called a lot of different names and has proven not to be very strong. Jay looks up to Charles because he has always been like a big brother to Jay. Charles always defends Jay when someone is trying to pick on him, but Jay somewhat feels embarrassed because after all Jay is twenty-six. Charles is the type of guy who doesn’t take anything from nobody, and is known as a smooth operator when it comes to the females. Jay’s grandfather, Ronald Wells, is a man who has trouble with his emotions. One day he’s up the next minute he’s down, but all the other time he’s proceeded as being a crazy looney. Jay sometimes hates visiting his grandfather, one because he always beats him at spades, and two he’s always talking about how he knows the answer to the mysterious disappearances of a lot of people in Detroit. He believes that there is rumor going around that an alien spaceship had landed, and that the alien was the reason for the disappearances of the people. Little does Jay realize, but he’s about to find out how right his grandfather just might be!
Sitting there fighting sleep in the somewhat dim, but plentiful classroom, Jay manages to wake up just for the last half of Prof. Schwartz's sentence. “In conclusion, the cause of such charges is produced or named by current electrostatic, remember that,” he concludes. “Have a good day folks, and remember to study chapter six for a quiz on Monday.” As the people start to walk out, the short, heavy bearded, bald headed teacher stops Jay.
“Hey Jay come here for a minute.” he said.
“Yes Professor Schwartz.”
“I noticed you were falling asleep again. Are you getting enough sleep?” Professor Schwartz asked with concern.
Although Jay admired his teacher, sometimes he felt his teacher was a little too sentimental towards him. Jay was one of Mr. Schwartz’s best students and Mr. Schwartz heard rumors about what happen to Jay’s parents. Mr. Schwartz always felt sympathy for Jay and for some reason Jay always felt as if Mr. Schwartz was trying to be a best friend to him. Jay knew he had to talk to Mr. Schwartz as though he was a gentle troll.
“No I’m not getting all the sleep that I need Mr. Schwartz.” Jay says. “I’ve been working a little overtime lately.”
“Well, if you need a little extra time to complete your assignments just let me know ok.” Mr. Schwartz gently replies.
“Thanks Mr. Schwartz!” Jay starts to head out the door.
As trying to reach out to a prodigal son, Mr. Schwartz stops Jay again for a brief minute. “Oh, and Jay!” Mr. Schwartz takes out a business card and starts to write his personal phone number on the back. He hands it to Jay. “If you ever need to talk or anything, just give me a call.”
Somewhat awed, Jay politely answers “Thanks Mr. Schwartz, but I think I’ll be ok.” Jay then finally walks out.
Heading to the cafeteria, Jay continues to check his watch while avoiding the on coming student traffic. Downstairs in the cafeteria Jay gets in line and orders his favorite beef stew with a bowl of fruit and an apple pie. Finding a place to sit by himself was harder than it looked at Bellman College. Everyone separated into his or her own groups, which ironically reminded him of high school. You had your jocks at one table, your preps, your model look a likes, the cool brothers, fast women, business, and of course like Jay- the average type. Fortunately, Jay manages to find an empty table. Sitting there eating he looks at his watch again as if he were waiting for someone. Well, that someone came, his friend Charles. Like a casual dressed merchant, Charles’ gotte, and muscles really gave way to the ladies, at which he had one on each arm. Looking and shaking his head, Jay often wondered how his best friend and so called big brother turned into such a playboy. Dismissing the girls, Charles spots Jay and goes over to sit by him.
“Jay, what’s up?” Charles says with ease.
“Nothing much.” Jay answers. “I see you had your hands full there for a minute.”
“Yeah, well you know…”
“Yeah I know!”
“Well what you got going for the weekend?” Charles asks.
“Working,” says Jay. “What about you?”
“A date!”
“I kinda figured that.”
“Hey Jay, why don’t you double with me sometime,” Charles all of a sudden brings out. “I mean you hardly ever get out anymore man. There is such a thing as free time you know.” Charles noticed throughout the years that the more Jay got older the more hermit like he became. For years Jay had cried out to Charles about the death of his parents, so Charles always tried his best to keep Jay up in good sprits.
“Well, ok someday!” Said Jay.
“That someday better be next week- ok!”
“Yeah, all right, and I will come this time I promise!”
“You better. In the meantime when you get through eating, we got a date with the weights!” Charles gets up and starts to walk away.
“Awe Charles man come on, can’t I give my body just one day of rest?” Jay yells out.
While walking away, “Jay those skinny muscles of yours are not going to get any bigger by themselves. I’ll see you in there.” Charles says as he smiles and walks away.
The gym was small, but had enough equipment in there for a football team, and that’s exactly who was in there. The gym was up to date though with TV’s and speakers for a radio. Coming up from the locker room, Jay goes over to Charles who was working out with one of the triceps machines.
“So you finally made it huh,” said Charles. “Well don’t just stand there man go and work out on something!”
With a confident look at Charles, Jay whispers,” You think you all that don’t you?” Jay says.
“I know I’m all that,” says Charles. “But, you’re the one who’s all that and more!”
Charles says laughing, “Shut up man!” Jay says as he goes over to the dumbbells and takes the 20lb off the shelf. Seeing that he could hardly lift it, he puts the 20lb back and grabs the 15lb. While doing curls with his right arm, Jay over hears a conversation with a couple of guys sitting kiddy corner from him. One of the guys with the twenty year-old body with the fifty-year-old face seemed a bit teary eyed as he talked to his hairy muscle bound friend. “Yeah you know witnesses say that he was walking down the street after he left the corner grocery store and then the next thing you know they turned their head for a second and he was gone!”
“Your brother just disappeared just like that huh?” The hairy man said.
“Yeah, no traces of anything! I mean the funny thing is that he was out in public you know?” cried the man.
“Man, just last week one of my Aunt’s friends disappeared just like that too!”
“I don’t know what’s going on here man. It seems like every time you turn around week after week someone somewhere has vanished- including my brother.”
“Don’t worry man, your brother will show up!”
Somewhat sadden by listening to the half crying man, Jay gets up to find something else to work on. He finds a pulley machine that works on the chest and arm area. After about pulling about five times, a tall, heavy muscled; clean shaving man walks up to him. “Ok, times up man, your gonna have to get up now!” He said.
“But I’m not through yet!” Jay says.
“Yes you are. I do my routine on this machine at this time everyday!”
“Ok, let me at least do about five more!”
Getting a bit frustrated now, “You can do five more when I’m through-come on!” Screams the angry man.
Hearing the commotion, Charles steps into the picture behind the muscle man unknowingly. “Hey,” Charles wrathfully says. “Either you wait, or you don’t get on it at all!”
Aggravated by the response, the muscle man turns around face to face with Charles. “And who you?”
“It doesn’t matter.” Says Charles
“Oh, I think it does!” he says angrily.
Before anything could really get started, Jay hurries and gets off the machine and acted as if he were through working on it. “Ok, I’m all done now!” He comes in between the two looking at Charles and the other man.
“Well, Charles I’m all through here,” Looking at the other guy now. “Thanks a lot sir, it’s all yours now!”
“Thought so!” The other guy says as he goes to sit down on the work out machine.
“Come on Charles lets go,” Pulling on his arm. “Let’s go man!” Jay says.
Finally snapping out of starring at the guy, Chuck goes along with Jay “Man, I hate punks like that who think they own the whole world.”
“Yeah, I know, he was just trying to be a young Charles.” Jay says sarcastically.
“Say what?”
“I was just being sarcastic man!” Jay hurries up and says.
“Yeah well, anyway you coming over for dinner later. My mom is making meatloaf. And you know how you love my mother’s meatloaf.” Charles says jokingly.
“Oh, meatloaf! Yeah you do know how I love your mother’s meatloaf, but unfortunately, I can’t. I promised my grandfather I’d see him. Plus I have this quiz I have to study for!”
“Well ok man. Look I got to get going. I got a 5:00 phone appointment with this girl who shall be named…. Destiny!”
“Do you name all your girlfriends?” Jay asked.
“Of course, that’s the only way I can keep them apart in my cell. I’ll see you around man. Give me a call later!”
As Charles takes off walking out of the gym, Jay yells out, “Hey tell your mom to save me some of that meatloaf?”
After while Jay leaves the college, gets into his car, and starts his journey home. On the way he sees a couple outside talking to the police. He observed a woman holding up a picture, of what seem to be her daughter, crying to the police. Her husband was by her side trying to comfort her. As Jay continues home, he observes the quietness of the city. He notices that there weren’t as many people walking around as usual.
Detroit is known as the motor city, and where there are cars, there are people. But during the last two months, the people started to get a little apprehensive because of the recent disappearances. The police are baffled thinking that the cause is some kind of sniper or kidnapper. Some others beg to differ, as if the Lord himself had come back and took all the Christians and left the ones behind who weren’t saved.
Jay hated coming to his apartment. One because it was too small, but with the money he made it was all he could afford, two he was surrounded by noisy people, and three- he was always lonely. Jay gets settled into his futon in his small little living room and turns on the TV set. There was really nothing on but the news. Jay really wasn’t into the news, but did always manage to watch a reporter whom he though was very pretty. As Jay watched her talked he actually listened this time. “As reports continue to come in all over Detroit city about the latest of disappearances,” she says, “The mayor has declared that the city be on orange alert at this time. He has issued a curfew for those sixteen and under to be in by 9:30. The police are on a city hunt down for lost victims as I speak. The latest victim is 37yr old Candence Miller who was last seen ranking the leaves at her home about 12:30pm Saturday. If you have any whereabouts on Candence Miller or any information on any of the other victims seen on the list bellow (graphic image of people’s names being listed below her) please call 555-0965. Karen Jones reporting live downtown Detroit. Back to you Pat.” She ends.
Jay turns off the TV set and starts on his homework. After doing his homework, Jay resorts to his other favorite past time, video games. Before long, the phone rings and Jay hesitates to answer the phone on account it could be his grandfather. Jay loves his grandfather, but sometimes he finds him very annoying. Jay decides to pick up the phone. “Hello.” He answers.
A sort of scratchy voice is heard “Jay!”
Recognizing the voice that it was indeed his grandfather. “Hey Grandpa!”
“Jay, how are you son?” His Grandfather asked.
“Fine Grandpa! How are you?”
“Oh fine fine,” his Grandfather says. “So when are you coming by?”
“Um, I’ll be there in about thirty minutes!” Jay says
“Good. Say can you bring some garlic?”
“You cooking something Grandpa!” asked Jay.
“No, no it’s for old Charlie. The Guys and I think that Vampire bat finally caught up with him when he got bitten twelve years ago. Last He’s been hissing with blood shot eyes all morning long. And you know, we heard some moaning last night coming from his room. When we looked at him this morning his eyes were blood shot red.”
“Really.” Jay says a bit droll fully.
“Yeah, and you know, I heard a heard a howling last night too at the full moon. Maybe you should bring your shotgun too. I got the silver bullets.” His Grandfather notes.
“I don’t think that will be really necessary grandpa. Did you happen to watch any scary movies last night?” asked Jay.
“Sure did. But you know all that stuff on there is fake. This is the real stuff I be talking about!”
“Right, well I’ll be over soon grandpa- goodbye!” Jays says as he hangs up the phone and raises his eye brows shaking his head.
Jay gathers up some of his things and takes off in his small, two door, black 96 Prism. Even though this was an old vehicle, Jay kept the car up pretty good. Arriving at his grandfathers’ facility and so-called Looney bin, Jay started to feel a bit apprehensive as always. He just never knew he would run into. Parking and getting out of the car, Jay starts his journey walking towards his grandfathers’ room. While walking, he runs into an old man running around wearing a cape thinking he’s one of the cape crusaders. Upon avoiding the grenade like water balloons between two old men armies, Jay finally makes it to his grandfathers’ hallway. But not before getting stopped by a want to be people traffic crosswalk controller. Jay finally makes his way into his grandfathers’ room. “Hello,” Jays says as he looks around the room. “Grandpa!”
“Over here Jay!” A scratchy voice is heard coming from a recliner near a window.
Jay continues walking into the dinghy, hotel like room. Stepping on and over peanut shells, Jay makes his way over to sit in a chair by his overweight heavy bearded grandfather. Playing cards and eating peanuts is Mr. Well’s favorite past time.
“Hey Grandpa!” Jay said
“Jay- have a peanut!” Grandpa tells Jay.
“Ah, not thanks!” Jay replies. “So what’s been going on here?”
“Oh you know, the usual,” Grandpa says. “School going ok?”
“Yeah, it’s going!” Jay says taking a breath.
“What’s wrong?” Grandpa asked
Jay looks at his grandfather with admiration. Jay can never get anything past his grandfather, even by the sound of his voice. “I miss them! I can’t seem to sleep at night thinking about them!” Jays says
“I know Jay,” Grandpa starts to say. “It was a terrible thing that happened that night.” As his grandfather starts to talk, Jay reminisces about the night his parents died on the airplane crash.
“Yep!” his grandfather continues to say. “September 15th 1988. You were in your room playing your video games. I was fixing me a sandwich when there was a special news report on the news. The reporter had said that there was a major airplane crash on the runway at Metro Airport. Right then and there I got a weird feeling in the pit of my stomach. Then when I found out that it was my little girl’s plane, I almost collapsed.” He ended.
“That’s when you came into my room. I didn’t know what to expect, but after what you told me that night. My joystick fell to the floor, and I was never the same again!” Jay sadly remembers.
Trying to live in the spirit, “Well yeah that was indeed a very sad time, but another sad thing is that you still can’t beat me at Spades.” Said his Grandfather.
Smiling now, “What, ok where are the cards. I’m going to beat you this time Granddad.” Jay says
Getting up with crackling bones, Jay’s gray head Grandfather heads into his bedroom, grabs the cards from of his dresser then goes to sit down over by a small table in his little old fashion contemporary dinning room. Jay is busy looking out the window looking at how few cars there were driving on the road at this time of day.
“All right, come on over here boy! I’m going show you how to play my style.” His Grandfather said.
“Granddad, isn’t there usually more traffic around this time of the day?” Jays says as he goes over to sit by his grandfather.
