Dark Romance

THE GIRLS ALL CHEERED when Sandra raised another glass.  “To Tessa!”

“To Tessa!”

“To me!”  Tessa clinked every champagne flute at the table, then gulped down her drink.

Bubbles rose in Tessa’s throat and tickled her belly while Jillian grabbed her arm.  “I can’t believe you’re getting married!  It’s so exciting!”

When Jillian started tearing up, Piri rolled her eyes.  “Not this again.  Enough with the waterworks, Jill.  It’s Tessa who should be crying.”

The table fell silent.  Most of the girls set down their glasses.  Sandra cleared her throat and Jillian let go of Tessa’s arm.

Sure Piri wasn’t Sean’s biggest fan, but why cause trouble now?  This was supposed to be a bachelorette party!  It was supposed to be fun!

“Hey,” Sandra said, in a cheery tone that sounded kind of fake.  “I almost forgot: I brought a little present for the bride-to-be.”

Sandra pulled a plastic tiara out of her bag and set it on Tessa’s head.

“Don’t mess up her hair!” Fina cried.

“Right,” Sandra shot back.  “From this day forward, only Sean is allowed to mess up Tessa’s hair.”

There were lots of ooohs and kissy noises around the bar table.  Truth be told, Tessa found the attention embarrassing.  She’d much rather fade into the background.

God, she was nervous about the wedding.  Having to stand up in front of all those people and say her vows?  Hopefully all eyes would be on Sean.  He’d sure look suave in his suit.  Sean always looked suave.  He was so attractive he turned Tessa’s mind to mush.  She couldn’t think straight when he was around.

As the girls taunted Tessa, making suggestive remarks about her wedding night, the DJ kicked it into high gear, turning the lounge into a dance party.

Piri was the first to get up.

“Where are you going?” Sandra asked.

Pointing across the room, Piri said, “I’ve got my eyes on that prize over there.”

Jillian looked to a dark-haired girl in a sequined dress.  “Piri!  This isn’t a lesbian club.”

Piri raised an eyebrow and said, “Every club is a lesbian club if you hit on the right girl.”

Everyone watched as butch Piri strutted her big black boots across the lounge.  Tessa felt like she was watching a train wreck in slow motion, until the girl in the sequined dress nodded slyly and handed her drink off to a friend.

“Holy crap,” Sandra said.  “I can’t believe that worked.”

“I’m gonna give it a shot,” Fina said, rising from the table.  “Piri makes it look easy.”

“You’re into girls now?” Tessa asked.

Hiking her tight skirt up her slim thighs, Fina said, “No, I want to see how many guys I can attract.”

“Sounds like fun,” Jillian said, hopping down from her bar stool.  “Wait for me!”

“Best of luck,” Sandra shouted, waving goodbye to the girls like they’d never see each other again.

Tessa sighed.  “And then there were two.”
