Amy glanced up at her husband nervously as she plated their dinner.  His eyes were still glued to the TV, watching a college basketball game and having a beer.  The two had grown apart over the years and she began to wonder if she was just no longer desirable to him.

Valentine's Day was just around the corner and she wondered if it would be like last year, a dud.  He had come home with a couple of half dead flowers and a small heart shaped box of chocolates.  There was no surprise gift, no spontaneous trip, or even a passionate night.

She had hoped that this year would be different, something to get their marriage heated up.  Maybe even to play out a fantasy that they both might have shared.  She sighed as she placed their dinner on the table and looked over at him again.

"Dinner's ready," she called out.

"Huh?  Okay, yeah, I'll be there in a couple of minutes.  You've got to see this, Kansas State is actually showing some signs of life," her husband, Frank, said, barely even glancing at her.

"Don't take too long, the food is going to cool down," Amy replied as she grabbed a pair of cups.

"Yeah, yeah," Frank grunted back.

Amy shook her head and poured some water in both cups before placing them on the table.  She sat and now glared at the back of her husband's head.  A part of her knew that this Valentine's Day would be no different than the last.  In fact, she wondered if he would be able to top her last experience.

"Frank," Amy said while clearing her throat.

"Hold on, just one more minute," Frank said as he cheered his team.

Amy shook her head and decided to just go ahead and eat without him.  Her husband hadn't even noticed that she had cut her hair shorter than usual.  She had been trying to get him to see it but it seemed he was too preoccupied.

Frank laughed, clapped and then stood up, smacking his beer belly a couple of times before burping and making his way to the table.  Amy shook her head and glared up at him.

"Oh, whoops, sorry, excuse me," he apologized as he pulled his chair back.

He gave her a small smile as he sat and grabbed his fork.

"Wow, spaghetti, my favorite!"  He said as he began twirling the noodles on his fork.

"So, Frank," Amy started.

"Yes, Amy," he replied, still smiling.

, "Do we have any plans this weekend?"  Amy asked.

"This weekend?  Uh... nah, I don't think so.  Why?  What's up?"

"Oh nothing, I just wanted to make sure there were no plans for Valentine's Day," Amy replied, a slight bit of disappointment in her voice.

"Oh, come on, that's just a stupid Hallmark holiday.  Just another way for corporate America to feed its greed," Frank balked.

"Oh, of course, that's exactly what it is," Amy replied.

"Hey, whoa, come on now, don't be like that," her husband responded.

"Like what?  Disappointed?"  Amy asked, now sounding angry.

"I thought we agreed that we wouldn't get all sappy for these types of fake things," Frank said.

"I know but surprising me every once in a while wouldn't be bad.  I have to go to work and listen to others talk about the great little adventure they had, or the necklace they just got and when they start asking me, I don't have much to say," Amy answered.

"Oh jeez, I'm sorry.  I didn't know that you felt that way.  What would you like to do?"  Frank asked.

"You can't ask me that, I was hoping you would surprise me or something.  Forget about it, it's my fault for even bringing it up," Amy replied, stabbing at her food with her fork.

"Oh come on, we can't leave it at that.  What can I do to make this up to you?"

"Nothing, just forget about it," Amy repeated.

"Fine," Frank replied, sounding flustered and angry.

The two ate in silence, only the TV in the background providing any semblance of noise.  Each time she heard the crowd cheer, she frustratingly glared at the screen.  She wanted to turn off the TV and eat in silence.

"I got dishes," her husband offered, breaking the silence.

"Great," Amy replied unenthusiastically as she got up with her plate.

"You done?"

"I'm not that hungry anymore," Amy replied as she walked off to put the leftovers in the kitchen.

She heard Frank sigh and clank his utensils loudly against his plate.  She wondered if she was truly happy in this relationship.  They seemed to constantly get into fights lately, from small things to big things, it didn't seem to matter.

She grabbed some saran wrap around her leftovers and placed it in the fridge.  Frank turned his chair so that he could get a better view of the TV as he ate.  Amy sighed and headed on upstairs, feeling more frustrated than ever with her husband.

Amy sat on her bed and stared at their wedding picture hanging on the wall.  She could remember a time when they seemed to always be happy.  As the years passed on, it seemed that their love did as well.  She wasn't even sure she knew what it would take to spark their love again.

She felt her frustration rising again as she heard the footsteps of her husband make their way up the stairs.  He grunted as he entered the master bedroom, his beer belly jiggling slightly.

"Hey uh... I'm sorry.  I really am.  I was thinking about it and I was wondering... what if... remember that time we were drunk?  And we were joking about fantasies?"  Frank asked sheepishly.

Amy squinted as she tried to recall what he was speaking of.  As the memories flooded in, her eyes widened.

"Oh... wow, you remembered that night?"

"Yeah, bits and pieces.  I was pretty hammered, huh?"  Frank laughed.

Amy could recall parts of the conversation she had with her husband.  It was one of the few nights where they had decided to go out and meet with old friends.  For some reason or another, the [...]
