The New Girl

“Hey, Sydney, did you meet the new girl in chemistry yet?” Lauren asked me.

“Yeah, I think her name is Morgan.”

“Yeah, what do you think of her?”

“I think she is really smart. She took over the class today.”

“How so?” Lauren asked

“Well, she answered all the questions mostly. She seems to be a straight-A student.”

“Hey, she is just like you! Except maybe a little better! She is the new and improved Sydney!”Lauren laughed.

“I think she is just a little better than me. But, I have always been Ms. Snow’s best student… I am not going to let Morgan be better than me at chemistry!” Sydney commented defiantly.

“I think I feel a war coming on between you two…  “

“You got that right, Laur… and I intend to win!”

“ And you must be Sydney Towers”

“Hey Morgan, yes, I am. How do you know that?”

I may not have liked Morgan too much, but I may as well try and be nice to her. After all, it’s not her fault that she is smart. I looked at her. She had a petite body, blonde hair, and bright blue eyes. She was a little shorter than I was, and she was wearing a red skirt with a blue top. She had a pencil in one hand, and a pen in the other. I thought to myself, this girl means business.

“And, I know who you are because you are such a great student” Morgan finished.

Oops, I thought in my head. I was too busy thinking about Morgan to hear what she was saying. Oh well, class was about to start anyway. So, we took our seats.

Ms. Snow started the class, and asked us an easy question: Class, what is the 1st Element of the Periodic Table?”

Morgan shot up her hand literally like, a half-second after Ms. Snow had asked the question.

“Yes, Morgan”?

“Hydrogen” She said.

“You’re right Morgan! Now, class, we have a quiz today. I just gave you the first answer. The one who does the best on the quiz will have no homework for a week!”

I looked at the quiz questions:

1. What is the first element on the periodic table?

2. What is the centre of an atom called?

3. True or false? Acids have a pH level below 7.

4. What is the main gas found in the air we breathe?

5. True or false? An electron carries a positive charge.

About  15  minutes later, I was done. I gave my quiz to Ms. Snow and 15 minutes later, Ms. Snow said that she was done grading the quizzes.

“We have two winners, Sydney and Morgan! Congrats to them!”

“Everyone else, please do pages 55-62 in the book  for class Monday. Have a good  weekend!”

I looked at Morgan. Morgan looked at me. We both were preparing for war.
