Beschreibung

She had been asked about her weekend, but in truth, it had been rather uneventful. But as she thought more about it, she realized that sometimes the most important moments in life are the quiet ones, the ones that pass by without fanfare or notice. She had spent her weekend curled up with a good book, sipping tea, and enjoying the company of her cat. It may not have been exciting, but it was exactly what she needed to recharge and feel at peace.

Introduction

Through books we come into contact with everything important that has happened in the past, analyzing also current events and putting our thoughts together to predict the future. The book is a window to the world, acquiring valuable knowledge and sparking our vivid imagination. It is a means of entertainment and is generally seen as a best friend, or as a slave that carries together all valuable information for us. The book is a friend who stays together without demands, a friend you call upon at every moment and abandon when you want.

It accompanies us in the hours of boredom and loneliness, while at the same time it entertains us. In general, a book does not ask anything from us, while it waits patiently on a dusty shelf to give us its information, to get us out of dead ends and to travel us to magical worlds.

This may be the travel mission of our books. Abstract narration, weird or unconscious thoughts difficult to be understood, but always genuine and full of life experiences, these are stories of life that can’t be overlooked easily.

This may be the start of something amazing.

Chapter One

Flashback Memories

Standing around watching while CeeCee and Nick, along with their parents and Jake, received the guests, I kept close tabs on Mark without seeming to in order to stay out of his way.

My concentration was so total that I hadn’t noticed Daniel until it was too late. Apparently, polite but distant didn’t work with him, so I decided to change my tactics to rude and blunt.

“Look Daniel,” I began, turning to look him squarely in the eyes, “you are incredibly good looking—which I’m sure you already know—and I have no doubt that you’re a lot of fun, but I don’t date irresponsible guys who act their shoe size rather than their age. You won’t change my mind, no matter what tactics you use, so please just stop.”

“You sure know how to suck the fun out of life, don’t you,” he retorted as he spun on his heel and left.

“You were kind of hard on him,” Mark commented from behind me. “He’s really not such a bad guy.”

“So everyone says,” I muttered, not in the mood to hear anymore about Daniel, especially from him. “If you’ll excuse me...”

Leaving Mark standing there gaping after me, I headed straight for the ladies room.

The reception was in the activity center and as the twins had been more than happy to show me around the day before while we were having the rehearsal and dinner afterwards, I knew exactly where to find the restroom. The facility, designed for one occupant at a time, made my locking the door less suspicious-looking and as I leaned with my back against it to compose myself, I was thankful for the solitude.

Mark was confused by my behavior, but there wasn’t much I could do about that. During my senior year, when CeeCee and I were still living in the DFW area, I made sure to have weekend dates whenever Mark came home to visit, and never showed back up to see her until after his departure.

The whole situation had been more difficult the past year since she and I had been roommates, freshmen at UT, but again, by constantly accepting invitations, I had managed to steer clear of Mark for the most part.

Church was the only place I couldn’t always avoid him. However, since Nick and CeeCee obviously wanted to go together, usually driving out to the Barrett’s place of worship, by simply extending my weekend dating time through Sunday and allowing the ‘chosen one’ for the weekend to escort me to church, I had the perfect excuse for not sitting anywhere near them.

Even better, sometimes I attended an altogether different church. One religion looked pretty much the same as another so that didn’t bother me.

In the normal course of events I would have probably given Daniel a weekend of dates, he wasn’t any more immature than some of my other ‘dates’ had been and was a lot better looking than most of them, but the fact that he was Mark’s roommate put paid to that idea. No way was I going to subject myself to that.

Admittedly, I was sick of the whole dating thing. All of them were beginning to run together and sometimes I couldn’t even keep the poor guys’ names straight. The problem was if I abruptly stopped dating now, people would wonder what was wrong, and I had no intention of anyone figuring out that I was hopelessly in love with someone who only saw me as a little sister.
