I gave up. I knew I couldn't win, and I was too tired to keep fighting. The last few months had been a constant struggle, with one setback after another. It felt like the world was against me, and no matter how hard I tried, I couldn't catch a break. But as I sat there, defeated and exhausted, I realized that sometimes giving up is the bravest thing we can do.

Introduction

Through books we come into contact with everything important that has happened in the past, analyzing also current events and putting our thoughts together to predict the future. The book is a window to the world, acquiring valuable knowledge and sparking our vivid imagination. It is a means of entertainment and is generally seen as a best friend, or as a slave that carries together all valuable information for us. The book is a friend who stays together without demands, a friend you call upon at every moment and abandon when you want.

It accompanies us in the hours of boredom and loneliness, while at the same time it entertains us. In general, a book does not ask anything from us, while it waits patiently on a dusty shelf to give us its information, to get us out of dead ends and to travel us to magical worlds.

This may be the travel mission of our books. Abstract narration, weird or unconscious thoughts difficult to be understood, but always genuine and full of life experiences, these are stories of life that can’t be overlooked easily.

This may be the start of something amazing.

Chapter One

“Sorry, Ricky,” Manda said after she pulled back from his bear hug, “Your brother left a couple of days ago for California.”

“Aw, man!” Ricky exclaimed. “I can’t believe I missed him. When’ll he be back?”

“He’s not sure. If you had just dropped us a note to let us know you were coming in I’m sure your brother would have postponed his trip for a few days.”

“But that’s no fun,” Ricky complained. “I wanted to surprise everybody.”

“I would say you succeeded.”

“Well, I for one am glad you’re here,” I spoke up in his defense. “This house needs a little bit of excitement. I know,” I said, feeling the first stirrings of interest since Drew’s departure, “we’ll plan a get-together so everyone can meet Ricky.”

“Felicia...” Manda began.

“I’m fine Manda,” I reassured her. “I’m not an invalid, just pregnant.”

“But Drew said...”

“Drew is overprotective and besides he isn’t here. How long are you staying, Ricky?”

“I only have a week, but I intend to make the most of it,” he said grinning and running his fingers through his short, thick, dark brown hair causing it to stand on end. He looked so much like Bill that I liked him immediately. “I’m game.”

“That’s great,” I enthused. “We’ll plan a party for Saturday lunch...that will give us plenty of time to get everything together. I’m so glad your father is still here. His flight doesn’t leave until Sunday.”

“Felicia...” my mother-in-law tried again.

“Everything will be fine, Manda,” I said a bit impatiently. “Mrs. Blanton will end up doing most of the work, she always does. She’s as overprotective as you and Drew. I’ll get CeeCee, Allison, and Lydia to help. I’ll barely even lift a finger...I swear.”

“Okay, but if it looks like you’re overdoing it, I will have to put my foot down.”

“Agreed...”

I didn’t want to argue with Manda, but I was determined to do something to get out of the blue funk I was in.

Manda had been so sweet and accepting of me from the first that I felt an overwhelming gratitude towards her. I had been afraid Drew’s family would think badly of me because of my...situation...but from the few things she had let slip, Drew had taken all of the blame for our predicament and she felt very protective of me.

I had tried to explain that it wasn’t entirely his fault, but she had made it plain to both Drew and me that she held Drew primarily responsible. I let it slide. Bill and Manda were wonderful people and I was just relieved they weren’t too disappointed that they were stuck with me as a daughter-in-law.

“You don’t want to mess with Mom when she puts her foot down,” Ricky teased giving his mom a squeeze around the waist. “So where do I stow my stuff?” he asked, grabbing his duffle bag off the floor.

“You’ll have to camp out in the baby’s room,” I answered. “Your mom and dad have one guest room and Denise has the other.”

“Denise is still here?” he asked in surprised.

“She comes and goes.”

I wasn’t about to tell Ricky my suspicions about Denise’s true motives. If the stories about him were true, he would tease her endlessly.
