At the beginning of the book, Catmull tells the reader how he was a fan of Disney films as a child, which inspired him to study animation and eventually become an animator. He tells readers that he learned two vital lessons about life and work. The first lesson was to surround yourself with people who are smarter than you so that you can advance your skills and intelligence. The second was that you must always try to improve, regardless of the chance of failure.
Catmull shares lessons he learned from George Lucas as well. Lucas taught him to always keep the long-term in mind, and Catmull took this advice when he began working for Pixar. Three of the lessons he learned at Pixar were that the story is the most important element of a film, to trust the process, and it is better to create great people rather than great ideas. Catmull also shares his suitcase analogy—the handle of the suitcase represents a “simple idea” and the case represents a “complex idea.” A suitcase does not function with only a handle or only a case—both elements are needed for it to function. With ideas, a person must put together the simple and complex ideas to create a whole, functional idea.
