When most people think of cryptocurrencies, they also think of cryptic currency. Very few people seem to know what it really is and for some reason, everyone seems to be talking about it as if they know what they are saying. Hopefully, this book demystifies all aspects of cryptocurrency so that when you finish reading through it, you will have a pretty good idea of what it is and what it is not.
At the end of the day, you may or may not believe that cryptocurrency is right for you, but at least you would be able to speak about it with a degree of confidence and knowledge that others don't have. Many people have already achieved millionaire status by trading cryptocurrencies. There is clearly a lot of money in this brand-new industry.
Cryptocurrency is electronic money, simple and short. What is not so simple and short, however, is the way it gains value.
Cryptocurrency is a digital, virtual, and decentralized currency created by the application of cryptography, which, according to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, is "the computerized encryption and decryption of information." Cryptography is the foundation that enables debit cards, computerized banking systems, and e-commerce systems.
Banks do not support cryptocurrency nor is it not supported by any government but by an extremely complex set of algorithms. Cryptocurrency is electricity that is encoded in complex algorithms. What gives it monetary value is its complexity and its security against hackers. The way cryptocurrencies are created is far too difficult to replicate. Cryptocurrency is diametrically opposed to so-called fiat money. While fiat currency is a currency whose value is derived from a government decree or law, cryptocurrency is not. The dollar, the yen, and the euro are examples. All currencies defined as legal tender are fiat money.
Unlike fiat money, another part of the value of cryptocurrencies is that like commodities like gold and silver, there is only a limited amount of them. For example, only 21,000,000 bitcoins will ever be mined. No more no less. It cannot be changed by printing more, like a government printing more money to pump up a country's financial system. Or by a bank altering a digital ledger, which Central Banks usually asks banks to do in order to adjust for inflation.
Cryptocurrency is a way to buy, sell, and invest that completely avoids both government oversight and the banking system that tracks your money. In a destabilized global economy, this system can become a stable force. Cryptocurrency also gives you a lot of anonymity. Unfortunately, this may lead to its misuse by criminal elements who use cryptocurrencies for their own purposes, just like regular money can be misused. However, it can also prevent the government from tracking your purchases and invading your privacy.
Cryptocurrency comes in many forms. Bitcoin was the first and is the standard from which all other cryptocurrencies are formed. They are all generated by precise alphanumeric calculations by a complex coding tool. Some other cryptocurrencies are Ethereum, Litecoin, Namecoin, Peercoin, Dogecoin, and Worldcoin, to name a few. These are called altcoins as a common name. Their prices are regulated by the supply of each cryptocurrency and the market demand for them.
