In Destroyed by Life and Saved by Art, Aldivan Torres crafts a poignant and inspiring journey of a young woman who rises from the depths of personal tragedy to the heights of artistic triumph. Her story begins in silence and confusion, marked by family struggles, unexpected motherhood, and the crushing loss of her husband. Yet through each chapter, she finds resilience in the rhythm of daily life and the transformative power of music. From ballet school to singing class, from street performances to international stages, her path unfolds with grace and grit. A music contest becomes the turning point, launching her into a whirlwind of television appearances and global tours—from the vibrant streets of Buenos Aires to the cultural heart of Paraguay. Along the way, she discovers not only the healing force of art but also the sacred truths of human dignity, friendship, and moral courage.

Chapter 1

Drowned, Recife neighborhood, December 25, 1940

Night descends in Recife. The movement of cars and people have slowed down a bit. It was another common day in the life of a poor family in the suburb of Recife. They were gathered in the room after dinner discussing general situations as usual. However, at one point, something different seemed to be happening.

Abigail

My love, I am in a lot of pain. She must be our third daughter who is going to be born. I am sensing she is coming into the world. Get the midwife. I need help to give birth to the baby.

Wesley

It is almost ten o'clock at night. What an ungrateful time, isn't it? But I know the right person to help us. Do not worry, woman. Me and our eldest son are going to look for her. I promise I will not be long.

Abigail

Thank you so much. You are a perfect husband. The man I have always asked God for. Be ware of thieves. Be careful of our son.

Thomas

Do not worry, Mom. No one's going to hurt us. We are strong, determined, and courageous men.

The pair came out of the presence of the woman who was panicking. They call an acquaintance who did a taxi ride at night. While waiting for their friend, the affliction only increased. Inwardly, they asked for their plans to work. A few minutes later, they were already getting into the car and going against the nurse who delivered at home.

Chapter 2

They advance on the dark streets of Recife. The cold and uncertainty are great due to being advanced night. What would happen? They try not to think of the worst and go on at high speed. Fate was not that far away that made things easier.

During the trip, they listen to a relaxing song to be more relaxed. They go through streets, corners, and blocks with great speed. It was a great dangerous but necessary adventure. What motivated them was the salvation of the dear family member. Their help was necessary for everything to work out in childbirth.

Fifteen minutes later, the pair get out of the cab, walk a few meters, and knock on the door of the nurse's house. Quickly, they hear the noise of approaching footsteps. The door is opened and from inside it, a fat woman comes out, wearing a nightgown.

Charlotte

My God, what is that noise in front of my house? Do you know what time it is? It is absurd to be bothered at this hour.

Wesley

It is a case of extreme need. My wife is close to birth. We do not have a doctor to turn to. So, I thought of you.

Charlotte

I remember her. Oh, my God, unfortunate thing. Forgive me for the way I treated you. I am going to come in for a moment to get my work tools. Do not worry, I will be right back. It is going to be all right.

Thomas

Please hurry. By the time we were going to leave the house, she was already feeling extremely ill. You are our only hope.

The nurse quickly entered the house. In a few moments, he came back with everything ready. The trio go to the car and then they leave back to Abigail's house. There was no time to waste.

Chapter 3- On the Way Back

The car moves fast. Inside, three restless characters talk.

Charlotte

My God, how is she? You must be feeling lonely and forsawed.

Wesley

She is fine. It is going to be all right. My wife is an extraordinarily strong and warrior person. She is going to put up with this until we get there.

Thomas

I believe that too, Dad. Everything is according to God's will.

Driver

I am going as fast as I can. Do not worry, I will be right back. Give birth is not that fast.

Charlotte

Truth. Let us just calm down. We are getting closer and closer to getting there.

They move even further. At one point, they just ood with the certainty of victory. How funny life was. Life was a result of our actions and, at the same time, the result of things that are out of our control. In fact, everything was in divine hands and that, in a way, left everyone calm. There was nothing else to do. About twenty minutes later, they finally reach the goal. A crucial new step would be initiated.

Chapter 4- Giving Birth

The trio arrived at the house and began the service of the woman. All three cooperated to make the baby's birth happen. About two hours later, a child's cry is heard, and the joy is general.

Wesley

I am the happiest father in the world. You were born, my dear daughter. In this moment of happiness, I remember my whole trajectory. I feel like an accomplished man with my children and my wife.

Charlotte

What will the child be called?

Abigail

Stephanie. That was my grandmother's name. It is a fitting tribute to a woman who marked my story.

Thomas

I think that is a beautiful name. We are all blessed by God. This deserves a celebration. Isn't that right, my sister?

Kelly

I am happy with the arrival of my new sister. It is going to be great to see you grow up. I need a female companion to have a confidant. I cannot tell my secrets to men.

Charlotte

I understand, darling. There are things we are free to talk to men about. It seems that our female gender is a particular world. I also have trusted people who are not men.

Thomas

This also happens to us that we are men. We have secrets between us that women do not know. Make yourself at home, sister. This birth was a blessing to all of us.

Wesley

Here is your paycheck, nurse. It is getting late. I am going to have the driver drop you off at home. We appreciate your service. Now we need peace and rest. Thank you so much for everything.

Charlotte

You do not have to thank me. I took an oath to honor my profession. So, I am always available to help.

The nurse receives a shower of applause for her kindness. She leaves and misses her. Everyone is going to sleep because the day was early. A new phase began in the life of that family.

Chapter 5- One year later (living room)

A year has passed. The girl grew up and with the help of her parents began to take the first steps. Let us see that moment.

Thomas

My parents, something wonderful happened. My little sister started walking. I was so impressed, I almost fainted.

Wesley

She is a warrior. She looks like me. She is a strong, winning girl. We are proud of you, child!

The girl sketches a little smile and applauds. Even so small, she seems to understand that she was being praised.

Abigail

I love you, my dear daughter. All my effort is being rewarded because you are a polite and kind girl. She is a blessing in the lives of all of us.
