To my mother

Foreword

Some time ago, after publishing the book, I thought it would be wonderful to have it translated into English. I searched the internet to see if any other novels were titled ‘Dorotea’. I was amazed when I found links to Dorothy Goodman and her schools. I felt honoured to have, in a way, brought forward an idea that someone in another country had already put into practice with great success. The coincidence was astonishing, particularly because the school’s founder shared the same name as the pro-tagonist of my novel.

Some might think I was inspired by these schools for the book; however, I only discovered their existence months af-ter it was published. I prefer to think that Dorothea’s spirit wanted to inspire me to shine a light on a particular need in Italy. It is a need often identified with old, forbidding asylums, which leads to a fear of establishing these kinds of schools, or even of recognising the importance of those that al-ready exist. This comes from the idea that such schools might make children feel isolated.

There is a genuine need for special school facilities that can connect with mainstream schools attended by other children. I believe this can all be achieved if the intention is positive, if we involve the pupils by asking them what they truly want, and if we try to create environments where they feel safe and happy.

Preface

Dorothea was born on a day when my mind was qui-et.

Relaxed, lying on my bed with my eyes closed, a vivid and simple image appeared: two concentric circles, coloured blue and green, pulsating as they embraced a ladybird. I drew it immediately, using an application on my phone.

In the afternoon, the name suddenly came to me: Dorothea.

I thought, This could be the story of a little girl. The book cover is here; the image from this morning is perfect. I must check online how to publish it.

A preface was needed to send along with the book. I began writing it before I even had the plot in mind, telling myself that it too would come. And it did. A few days later, it slowly formed in my head, and I had almost no time to write it down. The ideas were arriving in a chaotic rush, waiting to be put in order.

Who is Dorothea?

She is an inquisitive child who sometimes gets anx-ious about small things, or she gets excited and has a great de-sire to laugh, play, and be cuddled. But she can also get angry, in an absurd way, deep inside herself.

She loves solitude and silence very much, but some-times she grows sad, alone.

With her mum she makes her own chocolates, ‘almond eyes’, which she insists taste better than any from a shop (delusions of grandeur, which I suppose we all have).

Lucia is her favourite friend and Andrea is her com-panion of the heart. Dorothea loves ‘special’ children like her and her new school. She is a ‘special’ child, as ‘special’ as any child in the world.
