As we made our way to the back of the room with the cages, I started to feel a little funny. Kind of tired and kind of dizzy. I didn’t say anything, though. This was my first day at work and I didn’t want to seem lazy. Simon opened a door and turned on a light and the only thing in the room was a twin bed. “This is for when one of us gets a little tired. One of us can take a nap while the other one is minding the dogs.” I yawned and put my hand over my mouth. “Are you getting sleepy already?”
“No, no! I’m fine,” I said. “I just need to finish this coke, I think.” I downed the rest of the bottle while Simon watched.
“Feel better?” he asked.
But the thing was, I didn’t feel better. I was suddenly so tired that I had to lean against the doorjamb.
“Here,” he said, taking me by both arms and pushing me backward toward the bed. “Why don’t you sit down? You look a little pale.”
“I’m okay, really,” I said as I sat down. I rubbed my eyes for a minute, but couldn’t stop myself from lying back on the bed. “I’ll just lay here for a sec. I’m sure I’ll be fine really soon.”

When I opened my eyes again, I saw Simon standing in front of me. I was still lying across the bed and he was standing in between my spread legs. Everything seemed kind of hazy and confusing. My head felt thick and it was hard to move. “Why are my clothes off?” I asked.
“You took them off yourself, Sarah. Don’t you remember that?”
I thought really hard, but didn’t remember that at all. But my head didn’t feel like it was working right. Whenever I tried to remember anything, all my thoughts felt like they got pushed further away. “Why did I do that? I don’t know why I would have done something like that at my job.” I closed my eyes and put my hands over them, rubbing them and trying to get myself to wake up.
“You said you wanted to get more comfortable. You told me I should take mine off too.” I opened my eyes again and looked down at Simon. He didn’t have any clothes on. “Well, Sarah, I’m happy to welcome you to the Darlin’ Doggie Daycare family.”

“Okay, Simon,” I said with a giggle. “Thanks for taking a chance on me. I know I don’t have any experience at all, but I won’t let youdown.”
“Well, you seem like a responsible, young girl, Sarah. And since you’ll be training with me on the night shift, you’ll have plenty of time to gain all kinds of experience,” he said with awink.
“When would you like me to start?”
Simon looked at his calendar and the bookings for the weekend. “It looks like we’re going to be lightly booked over the next couple nights. Why don’t you come in tonight and get a feel for everything? Then, once you’re settled in, we can figure out a more permanent schedule. How does that sound?”
“That sounds great! Thanks, Simon!”
The rest of the day I was flying high. This was my very first job after I graduated from high school and it was in a field I was planning on going into eventually. I wanted to be a vet, maybe even one in a wildlife sanctuary in another country, but for now working at the local dog kennel was perfect.
Simon told me to return at 8pm for my overnight shift. So I packed a bag with some water and snacks and headed to my first ever job. I was really excited, somehow expecting there to be all kinds of things going on when I got there, but the lobby was empty, with not much going on in the back either.
“Hey, Simon,” I said as I entered the area with the cages. “Seems pretty mellow around here tonight.”
“Yeah, not much going on. We just have these five dogs that are staying overnight. No one ever comes in to drop off a dog this late, so this is probably what it’s going to be like for the rest of your shift.”
“Do we get to walk the dogs? Or play withthem?”
“Sure, we only let them out one at a time, though. We’ve had some dogs get into fights and it’s just not worth the risk, or the insurance premiums.”
“One dog at a time is totally cool withme.”
“Awesome,” Simon said with his eyes fixed on mine. “Why don’t you put your bag down and I’ll give you a short tour? Do you want acoke?”
“Oh, no thanks, I’ve got water in mybag.”
“Well, you’ll probably need the caffeine if you’re going to make it all the way through till morning.”
“Yeah, you’re right. I’ll takeone.”
Simon opened a small fridge that was sitting in the corner of the room and pulled out two cokes. He handed me one and started drinking the other. “So this is the back room,” he said with a wave of his hand. I giggled and took a drink of the coke he gave me. He walked me through the room, showing me where he kept different products the kennel sold, then through a doorway that led to a wall of large cages.
“Here’s where we keep our furry friends,” he said. “Would you like to let one of themout?”
“Sure! Anyone?”
“Yeah, whichever one youlike.”
I let a huge Great Dane out and he practically knocked me over when he jumped up and put his paws on my shoulders. I squealed and giggled, but I wasn’t scared. I loved bigdogs.
“Wow! Jeffy there is as tall as you are, Sarah!”
“My mom says I’m small for my age. I wish I was about a foot taller.”
“How old areyou?”
“I’m eighteen. I’ll be nineteen in a couple months.”

“I know,” I said with an eyeroll.
“I wish I was eighteen again, I’ll tell youthat.”
“How old are you, Simon?”
“I’m old enough to be your dad, that’s for sure,” Simon said with a smile. I had a feeling he was making some kind of joke, but I wasn’t sure what it was. “Come on, let me show you the rest of the kennel. You can bring Jeffy withyou.”
