ECHOES FROM THE SILENT MIND
A COLLECTION OF POEMS
BY
KENECHUKWU OBI
THE SEA IS A MAN
The sea
One moment
Shows calmness
It is blue
Speaks peace
The sea
One moment
Shows furiousness
It is murderous
Speaks violence
SEPTEMBER 11
From September 10- The next dawn arrived pregnant!
No one knew,
And
Dust, smoke, blood roared in synergy-The unexpected!
Americans swallowed a bitter pill
America, a back temporarily bent
September 11
A scar on her psyche
Intent on caging her freedom
Crumbling her iconic symbols
Beyond September 11
I see a stronger America
I see tears on her faceless foes facing judgment
I see an eternal triumph of freedom and democracy
THE FAMISHED
Not only those without food to eat
Not only those without water to drink
Not only those with unwholesome water to drink
Not only those without roofs over their heads
Not only those with cars and unhealthy roads to ride them
Not only those without steady supply of power
Nor only those without good medical care
Those with public health institutions in shreds
Education turned to a neglected child in any land- the land is the famished
Universities turned to cult empires in any land-the land is the famished
The famished is not secured at home
He who is rich but suffers insensitive governance- the famished
No option but becomes government himself
Provides light
Provides water
Provides security himself
The famished is the dubious politician
Full of hollow rhetoric
The smart thief and cultist
The cunning fox
The celebrated executive rogue proud of his moral poverty
His unending list of empty promises so impressive
As the governed constantly wrestle with misery so combative
The famished is a political party
Big but not for true democracy
Big for its rigging capacity
Party for ballot-box riggers
Party for electoral criminals
The famished is a discredited electoral umpire
He refuses to quit with his battered image- the famished
Shameless umpire-the famished
He writes election results
And not count voting results
He is the famished
The famished is the political thug
A foolish tool handy in evil hands
A stupid emissary of havoc
The famished is the political godfather
The man with no shame
The man whose evil scheme will kill someday
He wants to run everything-he is the famished
The famished is the callous one
Conducting contrabands to his land
Spoiled food, fake drugs, he cares not
He who murders the truth for oily hands-the famished
Sound minds inventing inverted platitudes-the famished
He sees the wake of tyranny
He sees justice unsettled
And he keeps mute-the famished
He who places self before fatherland-he is the famished
He who can do nothing to salvage anything-he is the famished
He who can do something but does nothing-he is the famished
The famished is a country
Lifeline strapped to one resource stream
With potentials for more resource streams untapped
She is such a fool to think all the while
That only black gold can keep her going for a long while
The famished is a ruler rather than a leader
A ruler never just-he is the famished
He gets heads rolling just to rule-he is the famished
He is the treasury looter-corrupt public servant
Unborn generations he tramples
With his heinous clandestine-deals
Oh! He cripples health institutions-the famished
See him now on medical trip abroad
Does he know death fears no land?
The famished
Unborn generations are the famished
Have quite thick rubble to clear
A big burden they must bear
What a fate they must share
And bemoan in awe
For we have failed them all
For being the famished
ABUJA
Where is Abuja?
I do not know
Is it in Africa?
I do not know
Capital city of any African country?
I do not know
What do you know?
A place where thieves go
Thieves with no guns
Thieves with visions
Thieves with visions political in mission
What more do you know?
Thieves go there -- Abuja
I know you know that
And what more do you know?
It is full of money-- Oil money
And what more can you say?
Thieves go there to plunder
And stay there to squander
PONDER THE LEAVES OF A TREE
To the tyrant
It’s to your delight, yes I know
Many heads you head at will
You name yourself sublime
But ponder the leaves of a tree
They surely fall after
THE SHY BRIDE
She is the shy bride; very shy bride
And I, potential groom
Her hand I seek.
She hides, very well hides
In between or behind
Mountains, muddy waters
Pricks and pits.
Wants to see me fall and rise
Fall and rise again
Wants to see me grimace and grin
Deflate and re-inflate
Down but not out
Then she weds me
She is success.
AFRICA TO HER CHILDREN
I am somewhere
From which you were taken against my will
I am the forest
You my trees were taken
I am the farm
Weeded against my will
I am the fruit
Harvested against my will
I am your mother and father
Not able to stop them
The raped
The bleached
The flogged
The stripped
Now I see negro-forests
My trees have made
In distant frontiers
Spreading from strength to strength
That soothes the flow of tears
That I most shed centuries back
Ride on….
Your blackness will always trace me
I did not really lose you
