IN EVERYTHING, EVERYTHING, AUTHOR NICOLA YOON HAS tried to show that one can indeed break out of one’s shell even under the worst circumstances. The rewards of jumping out of the well can be quite intense, and leave you with a sense of something achieved. In this story, this happens through love. Love can be a great motivator for people to do many things.
The plot centers around Madeline Whittier, a young girl of 17 years of age. She is imprisoned in her own home for several years because of her medical condition. Suffering from severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID), Madeline could not go out or interact with anything that has not been sterilized since the disease left her exposed to bacterial, viral, or fungal infections, which can take a heavy toll on her health. This meant that Madeline’s entire life was made up of her home and the people there – her mother and nurse, Carla. Her father and brother are long gone.
Madeline is content with her life and doesn’t complain. Her life revolves around reading books, which transported her to the places she couldn’t physically go herself. But when new neighbors move in across her home, Madeline’s ordered and cloistered world suddenly opens up. She meets Olly and they start communicating online with each other. As the friendship grows, they want to meet. This wish is fulfilled by Madeline’s nurse, who empathizes with her patient’s limited life. She brings in Olly into the house without informing Madeline’s mother, for which she gets fired. Madeline’s mother also refuses to allow her daughter to see Olly again.
