Bullying can happen to anyone and at any age. It is one of the most common problems faced today by children in schools and colleges and even with adults at workplaces. It might begin with someone hitting or pushing you, teasing you or calling you names.

If this behavior is not corrected at the right time can escalate and become more severe and uglier thus causing increased trauma and psychological damage.

Nobody has the power to hurt you, demean you or make you feel bad or even anxious or stressed. This needs to be accepted as your morale right and should be a motivating factor to help you to raise your voice against bullying.

Through this book we have treated this subject with sensitivity, going deeper into the various characteristics of a bully and a victim and the various forms and types of bullying.

We have highlighted the graveness of the problem through the after effects of bullying on the victims and also mentioned some easy tips for victims and their parents or close ones to help deal with this problem.

We hope this eBook will give you some deeper insights into this problem and help you understand and appreciate this problem better and help you stand up to it spiritedly.

Chapter 1 – What is Bullying?

Bullying is repeated abuse by a person or a group through aggressive behavior physically, verbally or socially and intentionally hurting, harming and causing fear in a weaker person or a group through such behavior.

It is unwanted and aggressive behavior observed among children due to a real or a perceived power imbalance between the bully/ies and the victim/s. If it continues over a period of time and is not addressed then it may have serious effects on both bullies and the ones who are bullied.

Types of Bullying

Bullying happens in various situations and can be of various forms and types that affect the well being of an individual. It affects both physical and psychological balance of the victim. Based on the nature of bullying they can be classified into different types as below –

Verbal Bullying

This is a common type of bullying that is seen in different strata of life. Verbal bullying is where one is abused through ways of calling offensive name, teasing and remarks depending on the color, sex or race. Perpetrators who take up such methods use harsh and rude words as their weapon of attack. The main objective is to put down and demean the character of the victim. This might come as a very easy and simple way of bullying but the consequences are grave just like any other form of bullying discussed in this chapter.
