Football – as round
as the world
Football is the most popular sport in the world. Over 250
million people around the world play football. No other
sport attracts so many people into the stadium and in
front of the TV. Football is probably also so popular
because it is really easy to understand and play.
What do you need to play
football?
On the local pitch or the playground
you don’t need much to play football: a
ball, two teams and two simple goals.
Strictly speaking, instead of a ball, a tin
can is quite enough, and a goal can be
marked out with backpacks: then you
can start playing! In club football, how-
ever, there are precise instructions: the
size and appearance of the pitch, what
kind of ball you play with, and how long
the game lasts.
What does a football pitch
look like?
In the official rules of football, the
appearance of a real pitch is laid down.
The playing area can be between 90 and
120 meters long and between 45 and 90
meters wide. Matches for children and
young people often take place on just
one half of a large football pitch. Games
are played on grass, artificial turf or ash.
Real natural grass is the best surface to
play football on. However, it is expensive
to maintain, unlike artificial turf.
Why are the lines
there?
On a real football field, there are
many markings. Usually they are
applied with white chalk. In the
middle of the square is the cen-
tre circle with the centre spot.
This is where the game starts,
and where play resumes after
each goal. The playing field is
limited by the sidelines and the
goal lines. If the ball crosses these,
then there is a throw-in, a kick-in,
or a corner. The penalty and goal
areas are located around the goal. The
goalkeeper has special rights here. For
example, he can handle the ball in these
areas. The penalty spot in the penalty
area is exactly eleven meters from the
goal. Penalty kicks are taken from here.

Who actually plays
football?
Football is for everyone: it is played by
young and old. It brings together rich
and poor who all enjoy going to the sta-
dium. In football, those who would oth-
erwise not have much in common need
to stick together as a team to win. That
goes for amateur footballers as well as
for football millionaires.
Football is played all
over the world.
Is football number one
everywhere?
What is a football
made of?
For a long time, footballs
were made of genuine
leather. But now they are
made of artificial mate-
rial. With simple balls,
many pieces of leather
are sewn together
around an air bubble.
The best, most modern
footballs are made of
individual sections of
artificial material glued
together with a special
adhesive.
barely wait. Only in North America
and parts of Asia are there even more
popular sports.
Football is clearly the number
one sport in the world. For many
people in Europe and South
America, it is an important part
of life – whether they are play-
ers or fans. Many football devo-
tees look forward all week long to
the game at the weekend: they can
Football is fun for everyone –
whether young or old.
Who makes money out of
football?
Football fans cheer loudest
when a goal is scored!

Sports companies sell equipment such
as football boots, shirts, and goalkeeper
gloves. Professionals are paid to play
football. With the best players in the
world, this can sometimes run into mil-
lions of pounds. Clubs get money from
selling tickets and football shirts to
fans. They also earn income from televi-
sion broadcasting rights.

World Cup – the best of
the best
Every four years, the world goes a bit mad. This
is the summer when the best football nations in
the world meet for the FIFA World Cup. For the
players this is a really challenging time, as they
need to win against very good players. The World
Cup is also exciting for the fans. Almost every
day there are several major games. You can also
watch teams that are hardly ever seen.
How long has the World Cup
existed?
1930 Uruguay
1934 Italy
1938 France
1950 Brazil
1954 Switzerland
1958 Sweden
1962 Chile
1966 England
1970 Mexico
1978 Argentina
1982 Spain
1986 Mexico
The first ever World Cup took place in
Uruguay in 1930. Since then, the world
championship has been held every four
years, with just two exceptions. The
World Cup is not just held in a differ-
ent country each time: every four
years it takes place in a different
continent. In 2002, the tourna-
ment was for the first time
staged in two countries:
Japan and South Korea.
1990 Italy
1994 USA
1998 France
2002 South Korea and Japan
2006 Germany
2010 South Africa
2014 Brazil
2018 Russia
2022 Qatar
Where do the most success-
ful teams come from?
Brazil is the World Cup record holder.
The country has won the Cup five times,
followed by Italy (four times), and Ger-
many (three times). Countries such
as France, Spain and England, which

every football fan would rank
among the greatest football-
ing nations, have been world
champions just once. The first
World Cup champions in his-
tory were Uruguay. The South
American team won the tour-
nament in its homeland.
Which teams participate in a
World Cup?
The World Cup determines which is
the best team in the world. So, in each
country, the best players are selected
for the national team. But of course,
not all national teams can participate
in the tournament. After all, there are
over 200 teams in the world. So, on
every continent, there are qualifying
rounds. The best 32 teams can then go
to the World Cup.
In 2010, the World Cup was held
for the fi rst time in Africa. In
South Africa, Spain became world
champions for the fi rst time.
Stars for the World
Champions!
In addition to winning a
World Cup trophy, players
are awarded a gold star
to wear on their
national shirts. The
more World Cups they
win, the more stars they
can show off!

Tournament schedule - this is how a World Cup runs. The winner of each game
progresses to the next stage. Before the fi rst round, a preliminary round is also
played.
Lothar Matthäus has played
in the German national team
in fi ve world championships.
No one has played more
championship games than he
has. His biggest success was in
1990 at the world champion-
ships in Italy, where he cap-
tained the German national
team that won the title.
Why is the World Cup so
exciting for fans?
A World Cup is always special: it takes
place rarely, the best footballers play
against the best, and teams from all
over the world participate. For the play-
ers, these major games are a particular
challenge. The fans get to know other
fans that they would otherwise never
meet. And watching football together is
so much fun.
Pretty heavy: The World
Cup trophy weighs
more than 6 kg.
Which team reaches the
final?
Every World Cup is organized the same
way: first, each team plays against each
other. After completion of the prelimi-
nary round, the top two teams in each
group go on to the next round. From
here on, a ‘knockout’ system is used –
this means that any team that loses
withdraws from the tournament. After
the first round, quarter- and semi-finals
there is a match to decide third place,
and the championship final.
What trophy do the winners
receive?
At a World Cup, fans from around the world
celebrate a great festival of football together.
The cup is over 36 cm tall and made of
real gold. It depicts two athletes holding
up the world. The base is engraved with
the names of all world champions. Nor-
mally, the trophy must be handed over
by the old champions to the new win-
ners, but in 1970, when Brazil became
the world champions for the third time,
they were allowed to retain the trophy.
So ever since 1974, there has been a new
trophy which is still awarded today.
