GIVING HER PRESENTS

By Sharon Love

“My best friend out did herself for my birthday. Instead of a surprise party, she gave me a surprise menage. Double the presents, double the cocks, double the climatic blowing of the candles.”

Something was up. Kendra was never late for anything. I’d been waiting at the bar for her for an hour. When she finally showed she didn’t offer the best explanation.

“Sorry,” she said, pulling up a barstool and flagging the bartender over to order a cold drink. “I just couldn’t get away.”

“From the office? You run out of there.”

“Not tonight. I had phone calls to make.” She took a drink and shrugged off my inquisition. “So your birthday is tomorrow. Are you excited?”

“I would be if you weren’t strangely late. Are you planning a party.” I sipped on my warm beer. “I hate those. My mom offered to buy pizza and have cake at her house.”

“Cheryl, you’re not a kid. I got you a present.” She smiled real big. Suspiciously too big.

I hated presents. I never got anything I wanted. No one ever understood how to buy for me. That was until I met Cheryl. We were so much alike. I had to grill her for more clues. “What is it? A book? Clothes? Makeup?”

“No, no, and no. You know how you hate returning things? With this present you’ll love opening it and once you do, you can’t take it back.”

“What does that mean? Tell me what it is.” I urged her, nudging her in the ribs with my elbow. “Do you have it with you now?”

“You’ll get it tomorrow.”

Kendra was closed lips on the subject for the rest of the evening. Nothing I did pried out any more details out of her. It was so odd, that I couldn’t sleep all night thinking about what it could be.

The next day, Kendra called and told me to dress like I was going on a date and meet her at an address. Did she get me a boyfriend?

Not what I needed. Sure I’d been without a man for a few months, but I hated being set up worse than I hated bad gifts. She said to trust her and she gave me one more hint. That this gift was only available for one day and that I had to show up or it’d be wasted. I followed through, half expecting to see Kendra to meet me there.

The place was in an older neighborhood. The kind with big houses and large grassy front yards. It was not what I was expecting at all.

I parked on the street and waited in my car for a few, looking out for Kendra. She said to be there at four. I was there, but no other cars were in the driveway. Before walking up to the house. I called Kendra. She didn’t answer.

The house was for sale. There was a sign in the yard and a lockbox on the screen door handle. The inner front door was wide open. Taped on the glass of the screen door was a sign. It read, “Let yourself in, Cheryl.”

What the hell? Curiosity was not my strong suit. I just wasn’t adventurous. This—was all too freaky. My palms sweated and my heart raced. “Get out of here,” one voice in my head said. The other said, “Trust your best friend.” I took a chance and pulled the door open.

“Hello? Kendra?” I waited just inside the foyer, listening for a response.

“Just a minute,” a commanding male voice answered from a back room. A shiver surged through me and my heart raced faster.

I looked around the room for anything that would clue me into what my present was. There was no party favors. No decorations. It didn’t appear or sound like a surprise party. I was sort of relieved. The room felt ordinarily staged like any other house set up to be sold.

“Is Kendra with you?” I was scared standing there alone. Maybe I got the address wrong. Who was that man back there? Every ounce of curiosity I’d never had built up was exploding out of my chest. I needed an answer. I had to be brave for once.

“Can I come back now?” I asked, stepping down the hallway. “Why do I have to wait?”
