Tasked with protecting it from unauthorized travelers and cosmic dangers, Gus navigates both the thrill and the weight of his immense responsibility, using his towering height and keen eyes to monitor passing ships, comets, and energy fluctuations. As he gains confidence in his role, a sudden arrival disrupts his watch: a tiny, glowing alien named Zizi, fleeing a deadly space storm. Confronted with the strict rules of the gate and the desperate plea of the vulnerable visitor, Gus faces a moral dilemma, learning that true guardianship requires not only vigilance and courage but also compassion and wise judgment. The story sets up a journey of growth, bravery, and unexpected friendship among the stars.

Gus the Giraffe Guards the Galaxy Gate
By: Kelly Johnson
Gus the giraffe stretched his long neck above the clouds, the wind ruffling the soft golden fur at the top of his head and making his tall ears twitch with every passing gust. From up here, the galaxy gate shimmered like a liquid rainbow suspended in the sky, a swirling portal so vast that entire planets could vanish into it in the blink of an eye. Tiny sparks of starlight flickered along its edges, glowing like fireflies trapped in glass, giving the gate a slow, rhythmic pulse—as if it had its own heartbeat, breathing with the universe itself. Gus’s wide, nervous eyes traced the gentle hum of energy rippling from the portal, watching the light bend and twist in ways that seemed almost alive, almost playful.
It was his responsibility to guard the gate, to ensure that only the right travelers could pass and that no troublemakers—or worse—could slip through. But at that moment, standing atop the highest viewing platform ever built for someone of his height, Gus felt a tremor of doubt crawl through his long legs and down to his hooves. He was young. He had only recently been promoted from “apprentice watcher” to “guardian of the galaxy gate,” a title that carried more weight than any backpack of meteor rocks could hold. The whispers of the cosmos seemed to press against him, reminding him that a single mistake could ripple across countless worlds.
He took a careful step forward, long legs bending with a cautious grace, hooves clinking lightly against the metallic walkway that had been specially crafted to support his extraordinary frame. The clouds below stretched endlessly, soft and undulating like a sea of spun sugar, catching the faint light of distant stars and planets that peeked through the gaps. The platform beneath him wobbled slightly under his weight, and he swallowed nervously. I hope I don’t break it… he thought, tail flicking uneasily behind him like a pendulum measuring the tension in his chest.
Even with the nerves, there was a thrill that bubbled inside him, electric and tingling like the fizz of a comet’s tail brushing the atmosphere. From this height, the universe seemed endless, filled with tiny glimmers of motion: comets streaking in perfect arcs, small ships gliding carefully toward the gate, and wandering meteors spinning lazily, leaving trails of sparkling dust in their wake. Gus’s neck, long and sinuous, gave him an advantage no other guardian could claim. With a single sweep of his eyes, he could trace patterns across the heavens, noticing a glint of light here, a sudden wobble there—a warning that something might be out of place, or perhaps, that adventure was just around the corner.
He breathed in deeply, the crisp, cold wind filling his lungs and ruffling the fur along his shoulders. The sensation was almost dizzying, a mix of exhilaration and responsibility. Every feathered, scaled, and metal-clad traveler that approached the gate passed under his gaze. He could see the tiny blinking lights of their control panels, the glint of their navigation cores, even the nervous twitch of a pilot’s antenna or the subtle sway of a creature’s tail as it prepared to leap into the unknown. Each movement told a story—and Gus had to read it all.
Beneath the clouds, the galaxy seemed to stretch forever. Tiny constellations twinkled, planets spun lazily in their orbits, and space dust shimmered like glitter scattered across velvet. He imagined the countless lives depending on him, on his eyes, his judgment, and the courage he wasn’t entirely sure he had yet. But with every heartbeat, that little spark of bravery inside him grew. The same spark that had gotten him through his first solo watch, that had kept him calm while comets zipped too close for comfort, that had made him stretch higher, look further, and hope bigger than any other creature might dare.
Gus shifted his weight, balancing carefully, letting his long neck sway like a sentinel’s banner in the wind. He could feel it now—the pull of possibility, the thrill of being more than just a giraffe, more than just a watcher. Up here, among the clouds and stars, he could be a guardian, a protector, a bridge between worlds. And maybe, just maybe, he could learn to be brave enough to match the vastness of the universe he now stood over.
Gus practiced shifting his gaze from one side of the gate to the other, slowly rotating his head, careful not to trip over the platform’s edge. “Left… right… up… down…” he muttered to himself, counting the seconds between flashes and movements. He imagined himself as a watchtower come to life, a gentle but unstoppable presence. The thought made him puff out his chest slightly, which only made his legs wobble again.
Above the gate, the stars twinkled faintly, even though the sky was just beginning to glow with the pale light of a distant sun. Gus wondered how many worlds depended on him, how many lives would be affected if he failed—even for just a second. The responsibility was enormous. His heart thumped in his chest as he leaned over the railing, trying to spot the tiniest spark of incoming ships.
“You can do this, Gus,” he whispered to himself, the words trembling just slightly, almost as if the galaxy gate could hear him. “You’re the tallest guardian. You see everything. You can protect it.” The hum of the portal beneath him pulsed in gentle resonance, as if answering back, reassuring him with its soft, vibrating heartbeat.
