Rapture in the sky!
What a difference a night makes in the gaming world. One night I'm going to bed dreaming about girls and games. The next morning I wake up and a new BioShock has been announced. A third outing in Rapture wouldn't have been a surprise, but someone must have put some funny stuff in my cornflakes this morning. 2K and Irrational Games has announced BioShock: Infinite - set in the sky!
I used to joke about BioShock 2 being set in the sky, as did the whole of the interent, and they've actually gone and done it! BioShock: Infinite is in development at Irrational Games, fronted by the creative genius behind the first BioShock, Ken Levine. Let's take nothing away from BioShock 2, that's still potentially my game of the year for this year, but the first BioShock was better. The Infinite hype begins.
Set in 1912, BioShock Infinite introduces an entirely new narrative experience that lifts players out of the familiar confines of Rapture and rockets them to Columbia, an immense city in the sky. BioShock Infinite is currently planned for release during calendar 2012.
Originally conceived as a floating symbol of American ideals at a time when the United States was emerging as a world power, Columbia is dispatched to distant shores with great fanfare by a captivated public. What begins as a brand new endeavor of hope turns drastically wrong as the city soon disappears into the clouds to whereabouts unknown.
The player assumes the role of former Pinkerton agent Booker DeWitt, sent to the lost city to rescue Elizabeth, a young woman imprisoned there since childhood. He develops a relationship with Elizabeth, augmenting his abilities with hers so the pair may escape from a city that is literally falling from the sky. DeWitt must learn to fight foes in high-speed Sky-Line battles, engage in combat both indoors and amongst the clouds, and harness the power of dozens of new weapons and abilities.
"We are excited to expand the world of BioShock, which is one of the industry's most critically acclaimed and beloved franchises," said Christoph Hartmann, president of 2K. "We believe that Irrational Games will lend their meticulous attention to detail and unique storytelling expertise to make BioShock Infinite an incredible entertainment experience that will immerse new and diehard fans of BioShock alike."
With the original BioShock selling over 4 million copies and being many peoples game of the year, it defined what us gamers wanted from a first-person shooter, "But when it came to begin work on BioShock Infinite," said Ken Levine, creative director of Irrational Games, "we only had one rule: No sacred cows. This game is both true to what people love about the series and unafraid to question every assumption."
Levine continued, "In order to explore the floating city of Columbia, we needed an entirely new engine. To bring Elizabeth to life, we had to build brand-new animation and AI systems. To create wide-ranging indoor and outdoor firefights at 30,000 feet, we had to rethink, rebuild and expand the BioShock arsenal. The only thing gamers can be certain of is this: the rules of the BioShock universe are about to change."
BioShock Infinite is in development for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC, and is set for a 2012 release.
The action spreads...
The sequel to the awesome Batman: Arkham Asylum is called Arkham City, as revealed by Warner Bros.
Arkham City takes the action to, well, Arkham City. Yes, that's Arkham City not Gotham. Arkham City is a new maximum security prison city with heavily fortified walls, located in the heart of Gotham. When the prisoners run riot, it's once again up to the Bat to save the day.
Arkham City "draws together a new all-star cast of classic characters and murderous villains from the Batman universe, as well as a vast range of new and enhanced gameplay features to deliver the ultimate experience as the Dark Knight."

It's a brain killer
It has taken 41 weeks, but Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is now the biggest selling game ever in the UK. The shooter has taken over from Dr. Kawashima's Brain Training, which has been the biggest-selling for a number of years now, after taking over from Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.
It's been expected for a while, and it's finally happened: Modern Warfare 2 is the biggest-selling game, having only spent three weeks out of 41 out of the top 10. It's not as if the game is going to stop selling either.
It's going to take something special to beat this. All eyes on Grand Theft Auto V, Black Ops, or dare I say it... Even More Brain Training With Dr. Kawashima!
Travis in HD
Konami has revealed that they will be publishing the first HD outing for No More Heroes, called Heroes' Paradise. Travis Touchdown will be making his debut on the PS3, and the game will be compatible with PlayStation Move.
As well as arm swinging, Heroes' Paradise will be playable with the standard control pad, but if you've played the Wii versions then you know the game was born to be played with the sensor remote.
No More Heroes: Heroes' Paradise is due for release in 2011 only on PS3.
Humans vs. Aliens Round 3
Insomniac games has announced Resistance 3. Yes, we knew it was coming, but here it is, the official announcement.
The announcement was made by Insomniac head, Ted Price via a teaser trailer. No other details were given. Expect more human vs. alien shooting action on PS3. That much is a given.
Remember, remember the 10th of...
Microsoft have finally put a release date on their camera operated motion controller Kinect. The date you will need to circle on your Hollyoaks babes calendar is November 10th - almost 2 months after Sony release their combatant into the Move-ing arena.
Microsoft announced the date at the Cologne-set GamesCom and here's what they said in the official press release, "We are bringing the Kinect experience to Europe for the first time at Gamescom because this is the biggest show in the region and we're committed to investing in Europe and the critical role it plays in Xbox's global success."
Chris Lewis, Microsoft's VP of Interactive Entertainment Business continued, "When Kinect launches on November 10, it's not just transformative for our business but its set to change how you use entertainment. We're already seeing a high level of anticipation in Europe with sales of the Kinect ready Xbox 360 250GB creating an all-time record weekly market share."
With Sony's Move expected for a September release, Kinect will have some catching up to do. The November release date is a clear intention from Microsoft that they want this to be a Christmas smash. One thing is for certain, it will be one hell of a stocking clash.
Classic PS strategy
PlayStation classic, Front Mission 3 is heading to PlayStation 3 and PSP, courtesy of Square Enix. Squaresoft's (as they were back then) strategy game will be available to download from PlayStation Network soon. I expect to coincide with the release of Square Enix's Front Mission Evolved this September.
Front Mission 3 is a strategy sci-fi adventure which gives you giant mechanical battle machines known as "Wanzers" to command in explosive, high-tech, turn-based warfare.
Featuring the Double Feature Scenario System, you can choose from one of two independent stories, each with its own unique characters, situations and environments. Up to 150 hours of engrossing gameplay - complete with a myriad of twists and turns - awaits you.
"With the forthcoming release of Front Mission Evolved, the Front Mission series is back with a bang. Before the evolution of the series, we think it's the perfect time to revisit a previous classic instalment with Front Mission 3,"says Larry Sparks, Vice President Brands PAL Region of Square Enix Ltd. "We're very pleased to be able to bring this compelling title to the PlayStation Network."
Claptrap's Robot Revolution
We hoped it was coming and deep down we knew it would, 2K Games has unveiled the fourth expansion pack for Borderlands. Claptrap's Robot Revolution is the title, and if you played the main game you can probabaly work out where this is going.
A robot known as Ninja Assassin, and his army of Claptraps, have started a revolution against the Hyperion Corporation. It's up to you to put an end to the war.
The DLC contains 20 new missions, new robot themed enemies - including new boss battles, waves of homicidal Claptraps, well-armed Hyperion soldiers, and local creatures that have been Claptrap-ified - including crab-traps, rakk-traps and skag-trapps. There's also 10 more skill points and an extra three backpack slots up for grabs.
"A year ago Borderlandswas an untested brand that through hard work and a lot of passion, turned out to be one of the best-selling, claptastic and skagtacular games we have ever created,"said Christoph Hartmann, president of 2K."A year later, we are releasing our fourth DLC installment, Claptrap's New Robot Revolution, which illustrates our enthusiasm for creating highly entertaining content that enhances a franchise. In addition to serving as the perfect bookend to the original game, what gamer doesn't love a kung-fu-wielding Ninja Assassin Claptrap with nunchuck skills?"
Claptrap's Robot Revolution will arrive on PC, Xbox 360 and PS3 this September for the standard DLC price - 800MSP / $9.99.
And detailed
Operation Flashpoint: Red River, an all-new chapter in the tactical shooter series has been officially announced by Codemasters. The sequel to super hard, realistic war game, Dragon Rising is due for release on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC in 2011.
Red River takes the action over to the remote and beautiful Tajikistan, along the Vakhsh River. By the looks of the screenshots it's a far more picturesque place to shoot people in than the plain fields of Dragon Rising. The game is set in the future dipicting a fictional war, in which you can fight single-handedly or with the use of friends in drop-in-drop-out co-operative play for up to four players online.
Codemasters say they've listened to the fans for Red River to improve the flaws of the previous battle. It includes a deeper narrative-led campaign, streamlined inventory and control system, a refined enemy and squad AI system (it needed it), player class roles including customisable XP upgrades and loadout choice, close-quarters combat, new air support options and comprehensive tutorials.
"Operation Flashpoint: Red River is being built around four player co-op online play, complete with a strong narrative, new enemies and combat scenarios to deliver gameplay that immerses players in the reality of war like never before."said Sion Lenton, Creative Director. "The new setting of Tajikistan is a diverse and exciting backdrop for the wide range of military challenges the US Marines face around the world in real life. We're excited to push the series in new directions while staying true to the core tactical combat that is the hallmark of Operation Flashpoint."
"In creating Operation Flashpoint: Red River, we're building on our strengths whilst taking on board feedback from the community and focussing on key areas and enhancements to further refine the Flashpoint experience,"said Adam Parsons, Executive Producer. "Whether playing solo or co-operatively, players will experience the tense and exhilarating tactical gameplay the series is famed for, expressed through a range of gameplay enhancements and an exciting new setting and narrative."
Operation Flashpoint: Red River is due for release on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC in 2011.

Developer:Treyarch
Release Date:November 9, 2010
Following up on one of the biggest entertainment products in history is no easy task. Infinity Ward's main talent have since shifted to EA and Respawn Studios, leaving the difficult task to Call of Duty's second development team, Treyarch - developers of the arguably inferior (but still enjoyable) Call of Duty 3 and World at War. It's fair to say that Treyarch's games stand out above most war shooters though, and are only looked down upon as they sand side by side with Infinity Ward's masterpieces, Call of Duty 2 and the Modern Warfare titles. It's also clear that Treyarch has been learning a thing or two about war shooters over the years, perhaps from Infinity Ward, so there's a lot of pressure on them to get Black Ops right.
World War II may be a thing of the past for the franchise (as well as real life), but there's nothing modern about Black Ops' warfare. Black Ops marks the first game in the series to be set across several different wars, all connecting for one bigger story. Throughout the game we'll be blasting our way through Vietnam, Cuba, the Arctic, Lao and Russia, with other locations still to be confirmed. If there's one thing video games are lacking, it's a decent Vietnam war shooter. It can only be a good thing that Call of Duty gives us what we want.
Of course, the huge success of Modern Warfare 2 basically guarantees big profits for Black Ops. With that in mind, Treyarch could have had some fun with this and left all press reveals to mission one, which could have been set in WWII. Only when players played the game could they reveal mission two is actually set elsewhere. Can you imagine the surprise? Of course, that's not great marketing, and if Activision want instant success they need to lay all their cards on the table from the get-go.
Out of the many missions that are expected in the main campaign, just four have been revealed so far.
“WMD”is set in 1968 in the Ural mountains, Russia. The mission introduces the SR-71 Blackbird and the Crossbow weapon. It begins with players being escorted to their new tasty aircraft, the aforementioned SR-71. While you're led to believe you'll be in full control of this thing, it's left simply to a few button presses to take off, with no aerial control whatsoever. You'll soon be flying over the Ural mountain region, guiding a team safely past enemy patrols via thermal vision.
Cut to: Below, in the freezing temperatures. Players take control of a US soldier equipped with a crossbow. The objective is to make it safely to a sub station, and avoid the Russian soldiers. Along the way you'll be rapelling down cliff faces and taking out enemies with the crossbow, which can be altered to fire explosives. It sounds similar to Modern Warfare 2's Cliffhanger mission, which began with climbing an icey mountain, stealthing through an enemy-filled compound and later escaping on a snow mobile. Treyarch has put their own touch to a similar setting, with a tasty new weapon and aerial support.
The Black Ops trailer has revealed that players can take control of a helicopter in Vietnam, which happens in the mission entitled “Payback”. With some guy named Frank as your gunner, players will control the helicopter to provide cover for the ground troops. Trouble also looms from the sky as enemy choppers will take fire at you. Eventually the chopper crash lands in the Hue River, leading up to the next mission in the thick of the Vietnam war.
“Victor Charlie”begins in the downed helicopter. From the wreckage players must swim up the Hue River, armed only with a knife. If this doesn't provide tension by the bucketload, then what else possibly could? The next mission“Slaughter House” takes us to familiar territory – the action-packed first-person shooter. Continuing on from “Victor Charlie”, players must take on the vietnamese troops, as well as assist choppers with targets and escort an armoured vehicle through the rough Nam streets.
Vietnam and Russia are only two sections of the entire game, and with others still to be revealed we can only hope that the single player campaign is a lot longer than Modern Warfare 2. In additon to this, and the multiplayer, Black Ops comes with 4-player co-op play. Not only can you take on the enemy with three buddies, but the co-op missions are set to use altered levels to house the four of you. This makes it as worthwhile as playing alone.
As far as the multiplayer goes, it's looking to be as good as the previous games, if not better. One new gadget worth mentioning is the RC car bomb. The idea is to find a safe corner, unleash the radio controlled car, and drive it to its destination before detonating it. This is most likely going to be a large kill streak perk, and one well worth killing for.
So far it seems Treyarch are handling the pressure very well indeed. There's no denying that Black Ops is shaping up well, and could potentially steal the crown as the best Call of Duty game yet. We'll see when the game is released this November. - MM
What happens in New Vegas...
Formats:Xbox 360 / PlayStation 3 / PC
Publisher:Bethesda Softworks
Developer:Obsidian Entertainment
Release Date:October 22, 2010
Fallout 3 was so enthralling in every detail that many of us didn't hesitate to name it “game of the year” for 2008. Not bad, considering it received so much pre-release criticism for not being much like the previous two instalments. Of course us Elder Scrolls fans trusted Bethesda Softworks to understand what Fallout is all about, and deliver a game that'd imprint itself on our gaming brains for ever more, which they did.
Over to Vegas and a new developer, Obsidian Entertainment, the folks who gave us Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II, Neverwinter Nights 2 and recent flop Alpha Protocol. Perhaps not exactly the kind of sparkling CV that you might think would win them the developer rights to Fallout, but Bethesda trust them, and what we've seen so far looks as if Obsidian know exactly what they're doing. Considering several of the Obsidian team also worked on the original two Fallout games, I should hope so too!
NCR
With this in mind, it's no surprise that Fallout: New Vegas continues on slightly from Fallout and Fallout 2, with no plot links to Fallout 3 whatsoever. Set in 2280, three years after Fallout 3, and 39 years after Fallout 2, New Vegas sees the return of the New California Rebublic, the largest power group in the world of Fallout, which first appeared in Fallout 2 (with brief mentions in the first game). In Fallout: New Vegas, the New California Republic are up against the Caesar's Legion army and the local New Vegas clan in a post-apocalyptic struggle to take hold of the Mojave region.
It's not exactly clear where we fit into this battle. Playing as the Courier, the game begins with us setting out to deliver a package. The package never reaches its destination, as for some unexplained reason the Courier is shot and left for dead in the desert. Luckily a robot named Victor saves the day and takes us to the local Doc. From here, we receive a pistol, a Vault 21 jump suit and the trusty Pip-Boy 3000, and the adventure begins.
Kill 'em your way
Throughout your quest through the desert and post apocalyptic Las Vegas, you'll be the target for countless foes. As made popular in Fallout 3, the V.A.T.S. (Vault-Tec Assisted Targeting System) returns, allowing you to pause the game, select the best target on the enemy, and watch a slow motion, gory bullet strike. Although V.A.T.S. was a unique and innovative combat system for gaming, not every one became accustomed to it.
Luckily real time combat is still an option, and heavily improved for the New Vegas outing. Players can now look down the iron sights of each weapon, a function we have become appreciative of thanks to Call of Duty over the years. The new 'Kill Cam' also allows real time combat users to experience the same slo-mo gory detail as V.A.T.S.
If that isn't enough, each weapon can now be customised with up to three mods, adding a scope perhaps or increasing the magazine size. There are also unmoddable unique weapons to collect along the way. If you're more of a fighter than a shooter, you can now use melee weapons with V.A.T.S. (not possible in Fallout 3) – precision targeting, slo-mo golf club swinging is now a possibility.
To add more choice to combat and camera, like Fallout 3, New Vegas comes with both first and third-person perspectives. While the third-person was pretty much unusable in Fallout 3 due to the terrible floaty character animation and silly camera distance, the third-person camera in New Vegas is now presented Resident Evil 5 style – tight at the hip. Suddenly a third-person playthrough seems more appealing (well, perhaps not to first-person enthusiasts).
What goes around, comes around
Whether you love to be the hero, or thrive on being the enemy, Karma is back to give you the good guy / bad guy option. Along with it comes a new reputation system, similar to the one seen in Fallout 2, and taking over slightly from Fallout 3's karma system. Your reputation will determine how each faction / town will treat you. Much like Fallout 3, being a bad guy will cause many folk to be hostile towards you, but be nice and some lady may harass you every day outside your shack to give you gifts. However good or bad you are, Factions will always remember you for what you did to them – good or bad. We had better be careful in Sin City.
Making friends in the apocalypse has also been improved, meaning a companion will actually listen to what you say. Not being able to do this is Fallout 3 caused many people to lose their poor Dogmeat prematurely. You can now order a companion to 'Attack' or 'Flee', as well as choose which weapon they should attack with. Naturally, each character has their strengths, and will happily grumble at you if you give them a pistol when they're the master of the shotgun!
Viva Las Vegas
All this talk of New Vegas and no mention of casinos? I'm not here to disappoint. The casinos are still thriving in New Vegas, and they're open to you if you fancy a gamble. Roulette, Blackjack, Slots, they're all open for some mini game fun. You can put trust to the test and take on the dodgy folk of Vegas. You win, you may even be treated to free food and hotel rooms. You win too much, then there's a danger of being accused of cheating. Viva Las 'post apocalyptic' Vegas. This is one game to get excited about. Who knows, perhaps a Fallout game will be winning “game of the year” acclamations once again?! - MM
Take me down to Fortune City where the grass is red and the girls are pretty... dead.
Formats:Xbox 360 / PlayStation 3 / PC
Publisher:Capcom
Developer:Blue Castle Games
Release Date:September 24th
The first Dead Rising shoved you slap bang in the middle of a zombie infested mall and said to you “survive”. You being the zombie slayer that you are, relished the situation with a huge grin and replied with a contented “no problem”. As Frank West you hacked and slashed your way through the mall using anything you could find as a weapon. The zombies didn't stand a chance against your vinyl records or cash registers. Up for doing it all over again? Thought so.
Capcom have handed over primary development duties to Canadian studio Blue Castle Games. With new developers at the helm you can expect things to change slightly. If those changes focus on taking the formula and improving on the flaws, then who can complain. One thing is for sure, with the emergence of Left 4 Dead, Dead Rising needs to step up a level to deliver the same zombie killing thrills as its predecessor and its rivals.
After surviving the mall incident, Johnny Lee Miller lookalike, Frank West has retired from the zombie killing game to be replaced by Chuck Greene. Chuck isn't a photographer like his predecessor, instead he opts for something a little more macho – a motor cycle. A motocross cycle to be precise, as Chuck Greene is in-fact a motocross champion. Don't expect to be snapping pictures of the undead in ridiculous poses. Instead, expect to create carnage with some motorbike action.
Like all zombie infestations we've seen in games and movies over the years, the outbreak at the mall was merely the beginning of global disaster. With the world in mortal danger, you can expect your playground to move away from the mall to somewhere bigger and more entertaining. So why not the capital of entertainment, Las Vegas? Well, Fortune City to be precise, but the resemblance to the real life town isn't much of a coincidence.
