PRACTICAL INFORMATION
BASIC INFORMATION
AREA OF JERSEY – 119.6 km²
POPULATION – approximately 103,000
CAPITAL – Saint Helier
Jersey also includes groups of
uninhabited islands:
Minquiers, Écréhous,
Pierres de Lecq,
and Dirouilles.
Map source: OpenStreetMap.org
FLAG OF JERSEY
It consists of a white field with a red St. Patrick’s cross
(diagonal X). At the top, above the intersection of the
cross’s arms, is the coat of arms of Jersey: a gold
Plantagenet crown (the royal crown) above a red shield
with three gold lions (so-called “leopards”).
POLITICAL SYSTEM – British Crown Dependency (alongside the Isle of Man and Guernsey) A dependency is a form of affiliation with the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland of territories (quasi-states) that are formally not dependent territories but are de facto under its authority (this dependence arises from tradition rather than law). Jersey has autonomy, but the United Kingdom is responsible for defense and foreign policy. Interestingly, even before Brexit, the island was never part of the European Union.
RULER – The official ruler is the British monarch, who holds the title of Duke of Normandy.
ECONOMY
After World War II, financial services began to play a major role in Jersey’s economy, accounting for over 60% of GDP, due to separate legislation and the island’s unique political and geographical position. Eventually, Jersey became a tax and financial haven. Additionally, the island is a popular holiday destination, with tourism contributing around 8.3% of GDP.
LANGUAGES
Jersey has two official languages: English and French.
The local language, Jèrriais, is the traditional speech of the island’s inhabitants.
Other commonly used languages on the island include Portuguese and Polish, both popular due to the large communities of Polish and Madeiran Portuguese residents.

PRACTICAL INFORMATION
BEFORE THE TRIP
WHAT DOCUMENTS AND PERMITS ARE REQUIRED ?
VISA-FREE TRAVEL TO JERSEY IS POSSIBLE FOR :
Citizens of the United Kingdom and Ireland – a recognized photo identity document is sufficient.
Citizens of the European Union (EU), the European Economic Area (EEA), and Switzerland – may travel to Jersey visa-free for up to 6 months, provided they hold a valid passport or identity card.
Citizens with settled or pre-settled status in the United Kingdom, Ireland, Guernsey, or the Isle of Man.
Citizens of Commonwealth countries with the right of abode in the United Kingdom.
Citizens holding a certificate of entitlement to the right of abode in the United Kingdom.
WHO NEEDS A VISA ?
Citizens of countries outside the above categories generally need to apply for a visa before traveling to Jersey.
Visa requirements are similar to those of the United Kingdom, as Jersey is part of the Common Travel Area (CTA).
ETA (ELECTRONIC TRAVEL AUTHORIZATION)
At present, an ETA is not required for direct travel to Jersey, but it is a mandatory document for most travelers going to Jersey via the United Kingdom. This applies to tourist, business, or family visits. The application must be submitted exclusively online through the UK ETA mobile app.
The ETA is valid for 2 years from the date of issue, but no longer than the validity of the passport it is linked to.
From February 2026, an ETA will be introduced for travelers to Jersey from countries that currently do not require a visa.
PASSPORT
Your passport for Jersey must be valid for the entire duration of your planned stay. There is no requirement for a minimum validity period after the end of your trip, unlike some countries outside the Schengen Area.
The ETA is linked to a specific passport and is valid for 2 years or until the passport expires, whichever comes first. If you change your passport, you must submit a new ETA application.
WORK / STUDENT / LONG-STAY VISA
If you plan to work, study, or reside in Jersey, it is necessary to obtain the appropriate visa or permit. Jersey’s visa requirements are similar to those of the United Kingdom.
Applications for a work visa or any other long-term visa are submitted through the Jersey Government’s online application portal.
HEALTH INSURANCE
For stays longer than 48 hours, health insurance is required. Coordination rules for social security systems (including the EHIC) do not apply in the Channel Islands, including Jersey, Guernsey, Alderney, Herm, Sark, and the Isle of Man.
There is a Reciprocal Health Agreement between Jersey and the United Kingdom. This means that UK citizens or those with access to the British NHS can receive certain forms of emergency healthcare, but only to a limited extent.
It is strongly recommended to purchase comprehensive travel insurance covering medical
treatment (including emergencies), repatriation, delays, lost luggage, and other unforeseen situations.

PRACTICAL INFORMATION
BEFORE THE TRIP
WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO VISIT THE ISLAND ?
Jersey does not experience extreme weather. There are neither scorching heat
waves nor severe winters. The weather can be changeable, but it is generally
predictable and mild. If you are looking for a place to walk along cliffs, relax on the beach, and feel close to nature, Jersey is suitable almost any time of the year. The
island has a temperate maritime climate, milder than most of the United Kingdom,
influenced heavily by the nearby Atlantic Ocean and the English Channel.
SPRING (MARCH – MAY)
This is an ideal time for active sightseeing. Temperatures gradual y rise from around
10°C in March to 17–18°C in May. Nature comes alive, and there are stil few tourists.
It’s a great time for hiking and quietly exploring the island.
SUMMER (JUNE – AUGUST)
The warmest and sunniest period. Temperatures reach 22–24°C, and rainfall is rather
sporadic. Beaches, coves, and restaurant terraces are full of life. In summer, Jersey
feels more like southern France than the United Kingdom.
AUTUMN (SEPTEMBER – NOVEMBER)
September is still warm and pleasant (up to 20°C), but it gradually becomes cooler and
wetter. October and November are ideal for quieter sightseeing, walking among
colorful trees, and visiting museums or castles.
WINTER (DECEMBER – FEBRUARY)
Although winters are mild, with temperatures rarely dropping below 5°C, the weather
can be unpredictable. Wind, rain, and fog are common. It’s generally not a season for
beach activities, but it is ideal for active sightseeing.

PRACTICAL INFORMATION
ON THE ISLAND
HOW TO GET AROUND THE ISLAND ?
There are several ways to get around Jersey. It all depends on how you want to explore
the island, how much freedom you value, how many days you plan to spend, and your
level of fitness. Here are the main modes of transportation:
BUS
The main operator is LibertyBus, and the bus network covers the entire island. The
main bus station is located in St. Helier. Buses run regularly, but services may be less frequent outside the peak season. Tickets can be purchased from the driver (by cash or
card), at a ticket machine, or via the LibertyBus app. There is also a prepaid card called
the AvanchiCard, which is cost-effective for longer stays.
Note! Timetables work very well on Google Maps.
CAR
There are 5 rental companies on the island:
Avis - Airport
Europcar - Airport
Hertz - Airport
Sixt - Airport
EVie - Airport + St Helier
You can rent electric cars, as there are charging stations in many locations on the island.
Due to narrow roads, it’s not advisable to take a large vehicle. Driving is on the left-hand side, and the speed limit is usually 64 km/h.
Parking:
Special parking cards (Paycards) are required, which must be purchased in advance and displayed in the car. Paid parking is available in the capital and nearby areas; elsewhere on the island, parking is free. However, parking spaces are often small (for a few or a dozen cars), and during the season, finding a spot can be challenging in some locations.
Most parking areas have free, clean toilets available.
BICYCLE
Jersey has a well-developed network of cycle paths and so-called Green Lanes (country
roads with a speed limit of 15 mph, where pedestrians and cyclists have priority). Bicycle rentals are available in St. Helier and at the airport. Electric bikes can also be rented, which can be very useful as the island is quite hilly.
ON FOOT
The island is relatively small (about 14×8 km), so many attractions can be visited on foot.
