Introduction

The scorching Georgia sun beat down on a boy toiling in a peanut field. His dusty fingers picked up clumps of dirt as he searched for the legumes buried within. This was no simple childhood chore, but rather a formative part of his daily life, his familial duty. The boy was Jimmy Carter, born in 1924 in Plains, Georgia, a tiny rural farming town far from the center of power he would one day inhabit.

Carter spent his early years immersed in the austere rural South. His family weathered the storm of the Great Depression, as plunging crop prices crippled farming communities. Yet he grew up in a nurturing environment, surrounded by open fields, country churches, and a tight-knit community that cared for its neighbors. Faith and family provided a strong foundation, shaping Carter's principles and worldview from an early age.

Outside observers would later comment on how Plains made Carter, providing roots that kept him grounded his entire career. Carter inherited many of the qualities later admired in his character and leadership from his early years in Plains. A strong work ethic, bold curiosity, love of the land, deep Christian roots, commitment to racial justice - the seeds of these virtues found fertile soil in the world that formed Jimmy Carter.

After high school, Carter left Plains to attend Georgia Southwestern College and the Georgia Institute of Technology. His studious nature and intelligence shone as he earned top marks. But Carter remained devoted to his community, returning whenever possible to the provincial corner of the world that cultivated his values...

World War II interrupted Carter's education, as he enrolled in the U.S. Naval Academy in 1943 before deploying to the Pacific. The future president relished leadership roles in the military, gaining skills he would soon employ in public life. After the war ended, Carter returned home briefly before deciding to enter politics.

Jimmy Carter's early life implanted in him the rural values of his upbringing. The egalitarianism, community bonds, and religious devotion characteristic of Plains shaped the man who would become president and renowned humanitarian. Carter never severed those small-town roots. They provided ballast through a momentous career at the highest echelons of power. The road ahead contained unforeseeable twists and turns. But Jimmy Carter's moral compass was set early and forever guided by the provincial farming community he called home.
