Just Before Christmas

1994 - Christmas Eve

Elliot Mitchel prowled the living room as a tiger in a cage. Molly observed his behaviour but kept talking to Jerry and Trevor.

Molly knew why her husband was behaving in this manner, but said nothing. Had always said nothing.

Jerry was fourteen and Molly wondered if he knew the impetus for his father's behaviour. Trevor noticed his father's anxiety but was only twelve, and a touch immature for his age.

It was Christmas Eve. It was the time of the year for families, for the gifts and the big dinner and the tree.

The tree had been erected and decorated by Molly and the boys, Elliot hadn't been interested.

The little lights were flashing on the tree, blue and yellow and red and white, and Molly could see it annoyed Elliot. But Molly said nothing. She had much more than a feeling Elliot wanted her to speak so he could have a reason.

But she was not giving him an excuse.

He kept prowling as the caged tiger, getting more agitated. But she sat, quietly, pretending to be unaware of him.

Then, she heard him suck his teeth,

"I'm going out..."

he announced, moving with purpose to the front door.

"But Daddy, it's Christmas Eve..." called Trevor.

Daddy didn't answer. Daddy went out, got into his car, and drove away.

Jerry looked at his mother, she met his eyes. She had the ability to be eloquent in her silence.

"Where's Daddy going?" Trevor interjected.

Jerry broke the gaze with his mother, said;

"Maybe to buy presents..."

Trevor grinned, and looked to his mother, who didn't disturb the lie, but turned her eyes away saying she felt like hot chocolate and rose from her chair and went into the kitchen. Of all the days for Elliot to abandon his family, this was probably the most painful. But she would glide over it, as she had in the past, because she was not going to profit much from a divorce.

The business was in both their names, as was the house. She had put up with Elliot's adultery for years. It just never happened on Christmas Eve before.
